Should I upgrade my tank?

Hi.

Right now I have a 14 gallon Biocube, and I was wondering if I should consider maybe upping it to a 29 gallon. I know my reef shop does trade-ins, so I could get some money back for my current tank.

I am thinking about having it nicely cleaned and fixed up anyways, and my Lid is "broken", the fans are really loud, and sound like they are scratching against something, and my moon lighting failed within 2 months of having the tank :|

So should I consider a 29 gallon over my 14 gallon? I herd that the more water you have, it gets a little easier to keep the chemistry balanced.

Don't really have nay reason why or why not to. Just was wondering if it might be a little easier to maintain in terms of water and all?

Im also assuming ill be able to house more types of fish in it. Does the 29 gallon biocube come with any other advanced types of lighting?

I know thats the main issue I've had, was lighting, cooling, and water flow. (and space).

Assuming I did upgrade, would it take as long to get it established if I use my current live rock and sand?

The more water you have the easier it will be to keep stable. And yes, transferring rock and sand from an established tank should greatly reduce or eliminate any cycle with the new tank unless you add more live rock that is not cured.

I just bought the 29BC because it was on sale at my LFS for $200. I plan to plumb in a 10 gallon I had sitting around as an above-tank refugium. Just an idea, but you could keep your current tank to use as a sump/fuge and then look for a 29 BC on sale at LFS or on craigslist or w/e.

Ok so I've been doing some looking, and have found 2 tanks that could work:

Biocube 29G HQI: http://www.marinedepot.com/Oceanic_...Oceanic_Systems_Inc.-OA36015-FIAQNCNT-vi.html

Red Sea MAX 130D: http://www.redseamax.com/redseamax/250Temp/redseamax/Red_Sea_MAX_specs130D.html

The Red Sea Max is 34G, and actually looks very nice, and has some cool features like a built in timer and the lid has a lock so I can do aquascaping without the lid all the way up. I don't think it has Halide lighting, which is mainly an option, although if it had them it would be nice.

In terms of price, the Biocube is cheaper (about $350 ish), but I wanted your opinions on which I should go for?

I currently have two 29 biocubes(the old model). I absolutely hate it. Having a normal tank with a lot more choices has been much better.

Haha. I wish I could get a 125 gallon. Price could be an issue, and I also don't have space.

Im pushing for the 34 gallon, as it is a little bigger, and looks pretty nice, has some cool features, like the locking lid top for aquascaping.

Anyone know about the lights it comes with? Are they pretty good?

Edit: Also with the 14 gallon I have now, what do you recommend I should do with it if I were to upgrade? trade it in, or use it for something?

Well Ill have to find out from my parents about the cost though :) Hopefully I can sell it to them :D

Might end up trading in my current tank just to reduce the total cost. Going for the 35 gallon one. I think my store will purchase it for me and get it delivered to them.

Ok time for another question. Do you think it would be worth looking into a custom tank of this size? I'm into in modern cube type tanks, and have seen some pretty cool ones.

Would a custom one be more then an all-in-one type of tank? Im assuming it is a bit more, but any estimates on a 35/40 gallon Custom with some good lighting?

I have the biocube 14 and the the red sea max 130D. My biocube is 5 years old and is doing great but there are restrictions on amount of corals and fish. Currently only has a clown and corals, Red Sea Max 130 D is a nicer viewing tank I think since it more at eye level for someone between 4 to 6ft tall. I think the all in one tanks are better the RSM has a built in power strip and hides all the wires pretty well. I upgraded it to MH and gonna go led now since the pcs dont cut it.

If you're patient you should be able to find any size and shape tank you want for a good price on Craigslist. You just need to check it every day. I just traded some old ps3 games I don't use for a 250w metal halide with led moonlight's from craigslist.

I looked at the lighting on the 130D and after some research I though they were pretty good. Maybe I wasn't looking at the right ones.

So indecisive right now. agh. Ive decided between the 130D or possibly a custom cube, although I have a feeling that could be pretty expensive :|

Any pictures of your 130?

Addition: Not sure about craigslist. If I were to get custom, my reef shop would probably be where I wanted to go. They have some really nice tanks, and the people are pretty helpful if you go on the right days :)

Yeah I think a custom set up is much better then an all in one. You are less restricted to what you can run as far as equipment. Try a set up with a sump so you can hide the larger equipment.
