BTW, nanoguy, your tank is what the word reef is all about. what kind of bulbs do you use to get that light spectrum? the first pic the light looks a bit bluer than in the second one.

Thanks for the compliment . I'm currently using one 400 watt 14K Hamilton bulb.....no actinic supplementation. The first pic you see was taken when I first fired the bulb. The following 2 pics were taken after the bulb burned in (about a weeks time). I'm going to switch my lighting setup soon though. I going to run three 250 DE's/hqi's on mini pendants so I can get better coverage on the tank (one 20k sandwiched by a 14k on each side). One 400 watter does not provide good coverage on my tank.

I've got the same problem. A single lamp just didn't cut it. I've currently got (2) 250-watt lamps and (1) 400-watt lamp (long story), but a pair of lamps overlapping each other works out much better. Unsupplemented point source lamps (halides) aren't quite the great idea they appear to at first thought, there is much to said for using indirect lamps (VHO, PC, etc) in cunjunction with the punch of halides.

And I'd still like to what the big green(ish) plating coral is?

Where is a good place to look for cubes? something bigger than the standard 60 gallon i see online, like a 90.

Thanks for the compliment. yeah, I like the top down view for admiring the colors of my growing zoanthid collection. I have plans to get a nice clam for the center sand area and top views on a nice clam are spectacular!

My cube is also connected to my 120 display, a 30gal+ refugium and and a 30 gal sump.

My 60 gallon cube (24x24x24) has one 400w radium and i get very good coverage - i'm actually about to switch to a 250 DE setup.

Lunchbucket....a single 400w MH would give you great coverage on a 24" cube. Use a spider light reflector....it is supposed to cover a 24"x24" area.

Triterium.... I used that "BIO Active" substrate....the stuff that comes wet/20 lb bags. I really like the grain size...I think it's perfect IMO. Another bonus is that it doesn't cloud up your tank that much when you first add it in but the stuff is a little on the pricey side. I'm using an AmpMaster 3000 as my return.

It isn't exactly about coverage area (which is about 2' X 2' with any MH fixture). It is about self shading (especially sps') and the resulting tissue recession.

MH light radiates from a single point, where as VHO, etc emit light along the entire length of the tubes and fill in the shadows (so to speak).

It just doesn't work out so well trying to enough light down into a sps' colony to sustain the coral tissues that aren't directly in-line with the path of a single MH fixture. The tissues on the "dark" side of the light path wither away.

Indirect light (VHO, etc) is much better at getting enough light down into the colonies to sustain the tissues, while the MH provides the punch for color and growth.

Does this make sense? Or just confuse the situation more?

You know what sucks? I asked about ordering the Oceanic 30 without the stand and hood/light setup, and they say that you cannot just order the tank itself alone. Have any of you guys had this problem?

I purchased the 30g cube - with glass top and NO strip - at PetSmart for $99 on sale. It may still be on sale.

That is a decent deal. I'm going to try them out; however, our PetSmart here seems like all they carry is that Perfecto brand. I'm checking them out anyways. But I did look on their website, and they don't have much for aquarium brands listed, what is up with that?
