I have heard that it is best to use substrate that is very white. It is suppost to help reflect light back up into the tank. This is more toward the HM issue than the thread .

I purchased the 30g cube - with glass top and NO strip - at PetSmart for $99 on sale. It may still be on sale.

all of the petsmarts around here have them for 99$ also. i've been tempted ... but that would be one to many tanks for me! :rolleye1:

OK here is my new cube; It is 42 X 42 X 30 tall. It is on it's side here. The tank will be installed 3 side viewable and be all SPS's.

those cubes are awsome, Im tagging to the thread...

Cant wait 10 months to get my new home and that means a NEW tank that will probably a 30x30x24 CUBE...

It will be about 90g.

For lighting I currently have a 4x75 VHO retro (2 URI white, 2 URI blue) I will use the current lighting plus an extra 4x24 T5 retro with all 6,000k bulbs...

What do you guys think?

THX in advance...

where would be a good place to get an acrylic cube, tank and stand made for a reasonable price?

THX in advance...

I'm getting ready to move over to a 30x30x24, I'll let you know what I think. I had to go glass due to the fact I wanted to do MH with an enclosed canopy.

Ahh, well Aquatic Discoveries said I would void any warranty if I used acrylic with enclosed MH. I figured I would just spend the extra money for glass then.

Enclosed canopy and a 30" width is not a good idea. The same tank I have and the canopy is the biggest PITA there is and mine has front doors, a regular canopy would be at least twice as bad. Can't reach the back part of the tank for maintenence stuff, FWIW.

I like the tank size, but for practicality reasons were I to build the system out again it would 30 X30 X 20 w/ pendant-type lighting and a slightly taller stand. Mine is an sps system though.

take a look at my setup. the 3 side viewable allows me to have doors on both sides. makes maintance really easy.
my tank which is a 2x2x2 stands over 6 feet tall with canopy.

paint, did they tell you why? was it just the constant high heat, or did not really get into it. right now the air temp in my canopy stays below 100 degrees with 2 fans pulling air into the canopy.

how hot is too hot?

I assume it was due to heat, but they didnt say what the limits for warranty voiding was.

I didn't think a 30x30 would be much of a problem. I'll have to make sure the top comes off for easy accessability.

Here's my vintage 1910 16" cube! I bought it on the weekend and will be setting it up as a very simple nano.
Tank2.sized.jpg

Needs new glass and the frame will need to be stripped, stained and sealed.
Will then add 2 small powerheads, a 75watt heater, 10 kilo's of live rock and an inch or so of crushed marble substrate.
Lighting will be 1 130watt 14'000k power compact. Hoping to keep 1 bta, a pair of clowns and some softies, zoo's and mushrooms!
