Show me your Dussumieri Tang

make sure you get an actual dussumieri and not an acunthurus blochii or xanthoperus (sp?) which are commonly sold as dussumieri's :)

thanks guys. but why is it so har to find any big detailed pictures of the fish, does anyone have a pic of them in their tank?

Generally these are collected fairly small and have not developed their adult coloration. They are very plain looking when they are young but demand a high price so there is not a huge demand for them thus you will not find many pictures. You probably have seen them in stores but overlooked them. Most people would not buy one unless they knew what they will turn into.
I have only seen 1 or 2 of these fish in a home aquarium with their adult colors and they are magnificant. I hear they grow really fast and they are one of the larger tangs available so I would not recommend putting them in a tank less than 180 gallons and that still may be pushing it. I have also read several posts that these guys like to rearrange your aquascaping and some tend to nip at coral polyps as well.
Good luck trying to locate one. Here is a thread the shows a nice picture of a adult dussumer with full coloration.

They get really large so plan on a big tank, if you don't already have one. Here is mine.

what size aquarium is your dussumieri in?

that is a nice one!! my buddy just caught a 2" dussumieri.. usually never seen even in Hawaii.. it was such a nice fish.

the smallest collection size is roughly 6" at the very smallest. Even at 6" they usually dont have their full colors yet!! small ones (1-5") are actually very hard to catch in HI because they live in the surges and there are not that many (that i can see or most collectors) They are my favorite tang. I love diving with them because they are not scared of you and full grown ones (20" or so) are the most beautiful fish.

what are some distinct differences between the BLOCHII and DUSSMEIRI, cause I would like to purchase a juveniles 2"-4":fun4:

Just saw a MONSTER Duss at the LFS today. The Beast was at least 12" and thick! They were asking $400 for him. Beautiful tang no doubt.

Dussemer's have very distinct white tail spines. Other than that they are very difficult to tell apart unless they have full adult coloration.

I would add that Blochii is rarely imported. You may find either A.dussumeiri or A. bariene. Well that's how is it Europe mainly.
