Show me Your Fancy STANDS!!!

Hello All,

I built a stand for a new 90 gal setup (upgrade from my first reef tank 55 gal). I have read that I should use a layer of foam on top of the stand. What type of foam is best, thickness, and where do you get it.

Thanks,
Mark

From what I recall if your tank is glass with rims, then it is not recommeded to use foam, however, if your tank is acrylic/no rim, then 3/8"-1/2" foam is normally used. HTH

Interesting, I thought that a foam base was standard for all tanks. Can anyone confirm or deny.. new tank is being delivered tomorrow.

Thanks,
Mark

I believe the rule is if the sides are resting on the bottom piece of glass you want FOAM. If the sides are supporting the weight, you do not..

Here's what I have so far:

I know the rule has been that if your tank is glass, with trim, do not use foam.
But my Visio tank w/ trim clearly states that it is recommended to use at least cardboard to deal w/ any deviations and that entire bottom trim should make solid contact.
I think the foam issue on trimmed tanks came about from people using foam much thicker than the space between glass and stand, thus putting reverse pressure on the bottom glass.
My tank has 1/2" space between glass and stand due to trim, so I used 1/2" foam pad, so no reverse pressure.

davocean,

If the tank instructions said use cardboard, then I would do it so the warranty isn't voided. My concern is the 1/2" gap between glass and stand. To me that is a big gap and reworking the top may be safer than using foam. IMHO. :) Oh, just had a thought. Is the 1/2" gap between the tank trim sitting on the stand or is it the space between the glass bottom and the stand?

Yeah, I was just stating what warranty said to do, and what I do for added safety.
I built my stand (I'm a contractor/carpenter) so it better be level!LOL
And to be clear, yes, the 1/2" is the distance the trim keeps glass off the subtop.
But no matter how good you are, there will always be a certain amount of deviations while using a natural product such as wood, and this is why I do lay a foam pad always.

Here's some pictures of our stand our 75 has no sump so below is storage and behind is access to hob skimmer and lights etc. since it is tight space we run a chiller that is plumbed through the wall into the laundry room and up into the attic. not in pictures but we have a matching entertainment center in the same space.

LOL!! Me too. The stand is made, the tank is on it and its cycling now. I'll get to the doors later!! You did a great job Jordan, it looks really nice. Now that is a fancy stand and a nice piece of furniture. :)

updated pics below. only thing left to do now is putty nail holes, add the top layer to the stand to finish it off, prime & paint.
