Two year old brown Palythoa covered rock

Two year old brown Palythoa covered rock

I thought I would post my seven inches of Palythoa on the top of my live rock. Caution: Washing hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after touching as they contain a powerful neuro-toxin.

Palythoa Polyps

Palythoa Polyps

A affectionately call those "Satan spawn" palys. I wish I had NEVER, EVER put them in my reef.

I affectionately call them Palythoa Polyps, the polyps with a history which angel fish will not eat. Their history goes back to ancient Hawaiian times when warriors would use the polyps mucous to coat the tips of their spears, etc.

My Regal Angel loves to eat candy like all the colorful zooanthae polyps. It cleaned off a $35 dollar Zoanthus rock in a matter of minutes!

It and my Blue Girdled Angel will not touch my palythoa polyps!

I also have another rock about four to five inches in the upper back left corner with brown palythoa with green tops.

I have touched these polyps with my bare hands and felt some mucous moving corals around next to the rock or actually moving the rock a while back. I washed my hands thoroughly with hot water and soap afterwards and I have never experience any ill effects even after brushing and flossing my teeth in the evening. Of course I made sure I did not have any open cuts, scrapes, etc. I always wash my hands and arms with hot water and soap after putting them in my tank and I mean every time.

I think I would be more concerned about owning a Stone Fish from Australia which can be purchased from a large national online retailer of salt water creatures and aquarium products. I can safely put my hands in the tank to arrange corals, live rock, etc. without the fear of being fatally poisoned by a camoflaged fish. I just added three additional anemones to my tank. I added a green bubble tip and two long tentacle anemones today to the pair of Red Rose Bubble tips I have had for a while inhabited by a pair of Clarkii clowns and a pair of Cinnamon clowns.:reading:

Yeah, I have them in my FOWLR too. No one touches them

FWIW, I was refering to their spreading, invasive nature when I named them ;)

My tank has quite a bit of LPS, not sure it classifies as "dominated", but here are some pics anyways :)

Yeah, no worries, I feel that way all the time after posting after some of these other tanks!

I like yours... it has that "vast seascape" look to it!

anyone with a LPS dominated tank that is BB. i have yet to see any brains or what not on the bottom of the tank and was wondering if there was a reason to this?

How much water flow are u running in ur tank Peter?

2 vortech MP40's, and two tunze nanostreams. Honeslty, my LPS seem "happier" with just one vortech on, but my fish and SPS love the flow, and it doesn't seem to hurt the LPS, since I have them all strategically placed with flow in mind, so I keep it all on full blast :D
