I wanted to revive this thread, as I am interested in learning more about the mimic tangs -- I am considering an upgrade to a 4'x2'x2' 120 gallon tank; a reef w/ small, peaceful community-type fish. So I am wondering if a potentially large fish like a mimic tang would be peaceful in a tank w/ fish all smaller than itself? What are people's experiences w/ these mimics -- are they hardy fish? Does anyone else have photos of their adults to share? I would appreciate any additional information.

Mine is very hardy, but for tangs I don't consider them to be very aggressive. Mine is currently housed with a large yellow tang and there are no issues.

Only piece of advise I would give is add them at the same time. I added my black,yellow, and chevron all at the same time into my 265. with no issues. On a side note it's funny when you say only a 200 gallon . Years ago that would have been a monster of a tank!

Is there such a thing as a mimic tang that stays yellow as a fully mature adult? Someone at an lfs told me this and I did not believe it.

mimic tangs don't get that large relative to other tangs. they also tend to be more rock pickers than straight line swimmers, like Naso tangs. a mimic tang would be fine in a 120 gallon tank. IME, as anbosu stated, they are not very aggressive for a tang.

they are hardy once acclimated, but can be delicate the first weeks.

I've seen some adults with a semi-forked tail. Does anyone know at about what age this develops or if it is gender specific?

Unfortunately I managed to kill mine in a tank move, but once I see another for sale I will have one in one of my tanks again.

My friend recently gave me one that he'd had for several years (full adult colors and was beautiful) but it didn't last a week in my tank. It's pretty odd since all my other fish are doing fine and all the water tests indicate great parameters. He looked sickly from the moment we got him into the tank.

Maybe they don't respond well to change?

Fish don't like eating dwarf angels because they are bony and don't have much mass.

I never had any issues with mine -- I screwed up my entire tank move and managed to kill off most of my livestock, not just my mimic tang. I switched mine from my FOWLR to my reef with no issues and never had any issues taking it from the fish store home, either.
