Richard Harker wrote an article about skimmers in an old Marine and Reef annual where he compared airstone skimmers with downdraft and other types of skimmers. By being able to independently adjust airflow and water flow through the skimmer, the airstone was the winner. He was able to shut down the bigger skimmers by hooking up a large airpump to it.

theres my DIY cc airstone skimmer, im injecting about 50lpm of air into it through 2 9" sweetwater fine pore diffusers. this is on my 90g bb sps tank. can give you a pic of it running later in the week when my new digi cam gets here. this thing can really pull out some funk. i run it pretty wet and have about 1/8 - 1/4" of sludge buil;t up on the walls of the cup in about a week after cleaning it. looks like baby poop

I don't feel it overpowers it I do empty alot of skimmate throughout the week though, lol. I was going to fit a drain on the collection cup, but then I'm afraid I'll get lazy and not clean inside the neck :smokin:
