Just a FYI, the chocolate chip starfish is a carnivore. I had one for a while until it ate one of my small bubble tip anemones.

Chocolate chip starfish are the devil. Went after my anemone and almost took my whole tank down. This happened several years ago, but I'll never own another one again.

Been away from this thread for a while and I come back to see even more amazing looking Nems!
Thanks for sharing everyone!

Hi. New reefer here. I'm planning my tank out, and I want to do it right. I bought a Red Sea 650 and I'm working closely with my lfs to get it all set up right. Your tank looks like I'd like mine to look: anemone, soft corals, and what looks like a stony coral too. Have you had any issues with getting all of them to play nice together? I'd like mostly soft corals, an anemone, with a few stony corals mixed in. How'd you get yours to work? Thanks!

I just setup a dedicate anemone tank and have been told that to keep the colors on some of these fancy BTAs the best lighting so far had been Kessil A360s by 2 totally different LFS.

What are other people's experiences? I'm looking for new lights to add to my dedicated Lightning Maroon / Anemone tank. I was suggested the new A80 but that sounds too low wattage on a 40 Breeder setup that is plumbed into my 450 gallon system.

Hi Dallaswinefan!

First off the Red650 is a great tried and true All In One using T5 lighting technology. From my experience a true mixed reef is tough to maintain even for me for having been in the hobby for over 25 years in the hobby due to all the different requirements that is not easy to satisfy in an enclosed environment. With that said starting with softies and some of the hardier anemones like Bubble tips are good till you can guarantee stable water parameters. It's also that many corals don't play nicely with each other and have chemical warfare if they are too close to each other.

Softies-
- Pros - Easy to keep with respect to light and water quality
- Cons - Can emit chemical toxins to the water so use of good Activated Carbon is a must.

Anemones -
- Pros- can be a great addition once acclimated in place and fed properly if lighting is not adequate.
Cons- They can move around the tank so any power heads and overflows need to be covered with foam or screening to prevent them from committing suicide and flooding your tank.

Hard Corals - (LPS vs SPS)
- Pros - Looks beautiful with great colors and variety
Con - Water Parameters and Nitrate/Phosphate levels are even more crucial

The key is do your research and ask questions as you did here to learn about the livestock and best practices because we've all done them before whether people admit it or not.

I know the above is very crude description of some pros/cons and definitely not an exhaustive list by any way.

My key point to answer your question is not everything plays nicely with each other. Provide enough space between corals and the correct flow and lighting.

There's too much to answer in one post but fortunately there's a wealth of knowledge on the forums and unfortunately many of it is from personal experience only and you'll have to filter out some of the guidance provided as well.

Just like what you see in the media today may or may not be 100% accurate.

Cheers.. Welcome to the hobby. It is very rewarding when you find success.. At minimum it's a learning experience.

That is awesome Jason - that's what I want to achieve at some point but with a variety of different color variants.
