Show off your ANGELS!

Man very nice angels. Whats funny is Im seeing them all in reefs. Ive been so spooked not to do it but it seems like there are alot of you doing it.

You're not hearing about the failures, so take that into account.

I've been fairly lucky with my attempts. I did have one gorgeous Coral Beauty that had been doing just fine in a 90 SPS reef with no nibbling issues. I got it from a friend and put it into my 58 gallon reef. It immediately began munching on everything in sight.

Angels are curious and will nibble on anything that appears like it might be food.

IMO, the real trick is to put them, (and every other fish) into a QT/Holding system separate from your display. Here, they can be watched for any signs of disease, and also conditioned to prepared foods. Once they are on prepared foods, you can fatten them up and ensure they are not "looking" for food.

This wont keep them from eating your favorite SPS or incredibly rare Blue People Eating Monster Miyagi Tort, but it should lessen the chances of it.

I've been very, very lucky with my Regal Angels. One thing I have noticed about both of them was that it took about a year for them to hit their stride and become more comfortable in my system and begin eating more aggressively and from a more varied diet.

I think all fish do this to some degree, but this is more pronounced in certain fish like the Regal Angel.

If you look at someone like John Coppolino, (Copps here), you'll see he has some incredibly rare and delicate angels in his systems, and he's had them for years. One of the things he attributes to his success is a solid QT/Holding system plan/protocol.

The thread starter, Michael Prater posted on another thread a great plan, (IMO) for angel/questionable fish QT. His plan is to tie a frag tank into his system and after the angel has been QT'd and acclimated to prepared foods, he intends to move the angel to the frag tank where he can see if there is anything the angel likes to munch on in a shallow-ish non aquascaped tank. IMO, this is a great idea simply because of the ability to remove the fish and find it a new home without having to go through the hassle of trying to catch the sucker from your display.

Thanks for the info. I agree with you on all counts.
Boy how it would be to have the money and room for a frag tank and a QT tank and a huge sump etc etc etc. Well next house!!!! Id love to build a tank like some of these 800gal guys that would be a hoot I cant even imagine what it cost to run a tank like that a month.

Boxfish,

You dont need a giant system or loads of money to set up something like that. It does take a little more money and some more planning, but thats all it takes.

Lets say you have a 120 gallon display tank and you want to keep a flame angel in it. A 20 gallon tank plumbed into your main tank can serve as a frag tank. Ideally, you plan ahead for the display tank to be drilled for another hole somewhere you want it. You run a drain line from this new hole down to your 20 frag tank. The frag tank is drilled for an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is fed from your display, the outlet drains to the sump. The 20 frag tank is now part of your main display and you dont have another pump to worry about as its all gravity fed and drained.

The QT/holding system should not be part of your system. You can use a rubbermaid container if you want. Once the fish has made it through the QT/Holding tank and is eating prepared foods, you can move it to the 20 where you have a few frags of your corals. If its not molesting them in a couple of days, then you're probably home free....

The frag tank doesnt have to be large, the fish isnt going to be in it for very long.

Here is my Eibli. He has developed a taste for zoas and will be going back to the LFS as soon as I can trap him. He has left my clams alone at least. Very pretty and not very shy.

that fish is much prettier than a zoa. fwiw my blue face from page 2 is getting better with acans and no longer nips at anything else as I learn to feed it better. good articl in another online mag about angels eating corals, and in their opinion it is the missing nutrients as maxx hinted at that cause the real problem.

Not sure what your doing wrong, but just copy the "Use this in img tag:" at the bottom of your picture in your gallery, they use the IMG button when your posting your picture to paste your image tag into.
