I am upgrading from a 100 24T X 18D X 60L to a 180 gallon 24T X 24D 72L

the 100 gallon size in just fine but the height to depth ratio of 24 X 18 is pretty constraining and no matter how you slice it it just ends up looking like a pile of rocks so I am going to 24 x 24 I have some acrylic rod, egg crate and zip ties, I want to have a pillar or two and I really dig canyons which may be quite a bit to ask of such a small tank but please give me some inspiration

here is my build thread:

It has begun, My new 180 SPS build

and here is my current 100 gallon pile of rocks, I did manage a few caves and a shelf

Nice Tank. I am also in the planning stages of a 180. Looks like I will be following this thread.

Sorry, i couldn't give any inspiration.

although I don't have any photos to share, I do agree that the wall of rock is usually pretty boring. I appreciate some openness.

cool, these are great, I can only hope mine looks as good as any of these.

serpentman, I like the pillar in the back, great idea

dca22anderson, swimming room behind, super cool but I suspect I would need something at least 30" deep

erendon, red and green caps on the back, did you just start them with superglue? do you have to clip them to keep from shading the entire tank? either way, it is very natural

wow, the 200 gallon cube is amazing, but my wife would kill me if I put thet in the livingroom that is a lot of realestate

a few pics of my open rock.. tank is 74x36x24

the PVC is now hidden.... the rocks fell off when i was putting the piece in.. so you cant see that anymore...

You may want to look at a thread called Leonardo's Formosa Forest. He has a very nice aquascape which is open, but not overly bare. His SPS has grown up and into the open space in the tank, giving it a true forest feel.
