Out of curiosity, what are those blue things back there near the mushroom? Is it some kind of sponge?

Actually, That is just a decorative painted coral skeleton that I bought several years ago when I started my first FO marine tank. Dont ask me what they painted it with but the color has held up well over the years and is obviously reef safe. That deep blue color always peaks peoples curiosity, you are not the first to ask.

Question to everyone here. I bought a 3 head duncan about 2 weeks ago and it hasn't fully opened up. How long does it take to fully open it up? It seems to open up more and night time. My water parameters are normal.

Hahaha!!! Cheater, I felt the same way when I first seen your pic :inlove:

I just picked up about 35 to 40 heads of these guys today from a local reefer for $35 dollars. It took a few hours and they all opened up. There are alot of baby's starting to grow. I feel it could be fraged. I really like this guy and would like to add it to my frag tank. I'll include a pic in a bit.

How do you suggest I frag this guy? Thanks

I have seen it done a couple of times with a dremel. You can use super glue gel to attach em to rock or frag plug.

I would think by two weeks they should pretty much acclimated.mine looked good after a few days by 3 weeks they were huge. What is your salinity level ? I noticed when I had a lot of evaporation and my salt level got higher my duncans shrunk and did not look well.
Mine seem to like low flow and low to moderate light.
What type of lighting do you have.

Salinity is at 1.025. Flow is moderate and lighting is 4x54W T5. I keep it on a rock towards the bottom of the tank.

You have the exact same lighting as me but i only have a 55g tank. What are your tank dimenions? What bulb combination are you using?
Have you tried feeding them? You could try a little less flow .Maybe that would help!

well i fragged mine for the first day. Since i had a dremel with a diamond wheel i used that. First cut seemed like the best bet was to use the dremel cause of the stony like stalk. since where i was cutting was close to other branchs that i didnt want to cut yet, i cut about halfway in than took a little flat head and stuck it in the cut and twisted lightly which broke the frag off cleanly.

Super glued the frag to a plug put it back in the tank it came from and was opened up the next day.

100 gallon 60x18x20 I use the following bulbs. I plan on adding another 2 bulbs soon and also staggering the lights instead of all of them lined up.

plan on adding another blue + and aquablue

I am able to feed them at night when they are more exposed. They come out but don't come out all the way as they were in the LFS.

Here are my two duncans, both from the lfs. The one in the foreground had four poloyps when I brought him home in May 2009. Each poloyp must have 20 to 30 heads now.

The duncan in the packground has an enitrely different structure and is just begining to multiply.

Both eat flakes, pellets, frozen food, coral food and anything else that goes by. My sailfin tang gets jealous and fights them for the food they capture.

I have the same lighting as you. Mine are midway up in the tank and get a decent/heavy flow (as seen in that video I made of my tank).

Do you have pictures of yours?

Love all the pics everyone. Don't know what took me so long to discover this coral. I love them. They really are cool! Mine have already grown 3 new heads, upto about twelve now. Not bad considering I bought it as a 3 polyp frag around new years.
keep your pictures coming!

Taken about 5 months ago. Need a new one. Got a single head about a year ago. These guys are tough. Now I have close to 25 heads. They will eat anything. there is a trick that I have heard. All my heads are real close to each other. Now are branching out. the skelaton or stock of it is still small just covered with heads. I hear the more you feed them the less they branch. Does anyone knwo if that is true?
