I figure I'll back out on the fish's view since this isnt a very easy one.

Dang, this must be a hard one cause no one is guessing. Maybe this is a species which warrants the entire image.

Well, I guess I need more than the whole image! Some of the meristics match that of a Holocentrid; ctenoid scales, large eyes, what seems to be spines on the anal and pelvic fins, however, there don't seem to be enough dorsal spines, I can't see if there are cheek spines present and pupil of the eye seems really elongated.

How about a hint concerning its natural history?

The fish is Lepidoperca tasmanica, the wavy line sea bass. I pass the next image post on to whoever wants it.

48 hours without a post? I really didn't want to hog this thread, but nobody else has come forward, so here is something to keep it going:

After I made this crop, I could hardly tell what it was myself, so I'll give hints and/or open the crop throughout the day if need be.

Nile perch?

I dont know, it looks more like a fish I would see at the supermarket than one I would see at the LFS.

Hint #2 - this species looks much better when its smaller and also a bit nicer when its larger - this sub-adult one is at just about the ugliest point in its life....

Yep! Your turn to post a picture, or defer to sombody else if you want to pass!

coralite,

What about that "skin fold" or crease at the front? For some reason, I'm thinking Dasyatis ray, or possibly a Torpedo, but the pupil seems too large....
