Sick or Normal?

Last night my haddani expanded after lights out and looked like he was standing on his toes.

This morning when the lights came on he shrunk down and almost turned inside out.

Is this normal?

No, that isn't normal.

How long have you had it? If it is still fairly new this isn't a good sign. I have yet to get a Haddoni (( a new one )) to recover from that point.

What size tank?
What lights?
What are your water parameters? (( with numbers ))

Very new... 6 days. He was behaving as expected until this morning... very sticky, closed mouth, good feeding reaction (although not actually consuming anything)

Tanks is a 55g with 40lb LR, 20g sump/fuge. Paramaters are 0/0/~15ppm NO3-/78 deg F/ 8.1 ph/ 1.024 sg. Lighting is 4x 54w T-5

Did you acclimate it to your lights?

I would try to bump up the SG to 1.026, though I don't think that is the cause of this.

I would keep a close eye on it, I have seen this before (( too many times )) where they start off great, about 5 days or so, and then start this behavior. I really hope that I am wrong, but I don't have a good feeling about this one. Though I wouldn't take any drastic measures at this point --- besides acclimating it to your lights if you haven't already.

I didnt acclimate to lights - just water. The lights at the store are comparable to the ones I have so the lighting difference was minimal.

Quick update: just walked down to check on the dog and the nem seems to have sucked his mouth mostly back in. Hope that is a good sign.

It surely isn't a bad sign.

Again, I really hope that I am wrong, but I still wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

IME, it isn't all that uncommon for them to do that.

I had one that acted very similar,

Started off like this,

Couple of hours later,

Then back to this,

Then finally 24 hours later,

Like I said, not trying to be a tool about this, just want you to be prepared --- it might be fine, or it mine wax and wane like mine did.

Update: he seems to be completly back to normal this morning. The actinics are still just on so we'll see if its a light thing when the whites come on in an hour.

That is great news!:bounce1: Will still be a waiting game though. Unfortunatly my experiences have been the same as Todd's. I am hoping for the best though! Do you have clowns in the system? If so are they trying to host ?

I have a mated pair of Occelaris who couldnt give a fig that there is a nem in the tank. Ive considered swapping my Occs and Tomatos (in their own tank) in hopes that they host. The problem then is the Toms being aggressive towards the rest of the tank.

I wouldn't worry about switching. I was wondering b/c clowns will often help the nem acclimate. But at this point I don't think it will matter. Keep us updated with pics if you can, but I think it is just a waiting game now. Best of luck!

Since I got him a week or so ago, he has been like this +/- an inch or so of expansion with the exception of yesterday when he totally deflated. His mouth has been generally about like this, although a shade tighter before the deflation.

He has good color which you cant really see from these pictures. He is reactive although wont eat anything offered. He is very sticky.

This is my Haddoni 24 hours after the first picture was taken:

That sure looks like a chocolate chip star on the rock --- on the left hand side. If so, I would suggest getting rid of it, they are not reef safe and could attempt to go after your anemone.

Todd, it is a CC Star. I didnt realize it would go after something so large as a Haddoni at about 50x its mass. Thanks for the tip. I will move him to another tank.
