Apologize for bringing up an older thread. I wonder if your tang was being attacked by your foxface. I had a powder brown tang that would occasionally show dark patches on his belly and I believe it to be a sting from the foxface's venomous spines. He always recovered within a weeks time however. Some people don't realize that the foxface has venomous spines similar to a lionfish. They will defend themselves if being threatened. I've seen my foxface flick his spines out in a fraction of a second when cornered or otherwise harassed.
Hope this might help someone. Sorry for your loss. I just purchased a shoulder tang and I have a foxface in the tank currently. Hopefully they get along.
