I tend to just go with the flow. Often some handwritting font or script. Occasioally a drop shadow. Sometimes I pull the font color out the image. Either to make it less obvious or just to feed off available colors. Like most things in artistic endevors..."it depends".
The reality of it that if someone wants your image they got it. Wthout destroying the image anyone with moderate PS skills can remove a watermark in a few seconds. I used to often out the watermark over the main subject but soon figured it didn't really matter. The best bet (from a protection standpoint) is too just post small file sizes. To be honest, I often do not post the best of my best just because that is the only truely safe thing to do.
