Silence overflows with Lots of flow

Ok. so Ihad a durso on my old tank. it worked good at about 900 GPH. im looking at like 2000-3000 gph now thru the sump on this tank. I know that is alot and I can always throttle it back, but for now it seems to work well enough and so long as the skimmer isnt running, I have no microbubble issues. the issue I have is the overflows. they are LOUD. I need to silence them a bit.

Im thinking of doing a pair of stockman style silencers. I have room for a Durso, but would like to try the stockman if possible. Here is what im thinking.

I have 1 1/2" bulkheads, so I will use 1 1/2" pipe all the way up with a 2" slip connector for the "bell" do you think this will handle roughly 1500 gph per pipe? (yea I know.. I gots alot of water.) I can always valve the main pump back. Its amazing the ammt of water this system is moving. currently im guessing im somewhere close to 4000 GPH total now and will add about 1000 gph when I get the barracuda back up.


Let me know your thoughs on the pipes, or if you have a different idea for silencing the overflows.

I thought about using the gurgle buster in my overflow. I heard some pretty good reviews on it, and it is cheap enought to try it out.
 
The Stockman is much quieter than the Durso. I have had both, and the Stockman is nearly silent at 1000 gph with only an 1/8th inch hole drilled in the top.
If you build a Stockman from 1 1/2" and 2" coupler I would make the holes in the 1 1/2" pipe as large as possible. Remember, the more flow the more noise, and the bigger the vent.

Why do you want that much turnover through your sump? Maybe the combination of 2 Dursos and a Closed loop would be best for circulation, and filtration.

I've used Hofers on all my tanks for over 5 years, They can be built in any size to handle any flow rate. They are absolutly silent and are easy to make, The cost is a couple of pieces of PVC couplings and a little time. Just Google Hofer gurgle buster for the site to see how to build them and adjust them. If you like!

can your overflow handle that flow ?do your homework now so you dont have to buy a second pump or at least put a restrictor valve on the return to help silence that tsunami .
 
Lindsay, I have to agree with Wrasseman your excessive flow rate thru the sump is counter productive (Leaves little dwell time) and that's the whole point of a sump/fuge.
Plus your going to wash everything clean with all the turbulance, No Pod reproduction, Chaeto growth, Nitrate reduction Etc. JMHO

Bill.. I have rethought it entirely and will be re-working my plumbing outside to change it up. ive decided to split the barracuda 3 ways. chiller, skimmer and then the tank. should make for about 1000 gallons each way. ill be able to throttle back the water in any direction I wish. I was just a bit gung ho when I put it all together going the tim taylor "MORE POWER" route. No worries... If that is still too strong, then ill swap the dart to the sump and put the barracuda in the closed loop.
 
I think you should upgrade to the Binford model xj8201 turbo 12,000 GPH diesel powered return pump. <Insert obligatory grunt here>

Glad to hear you are re-working it. I like it a bit slower in my sump for the reasons that Bill mentioned, and you can always add more power in the DT with powerheads.
 
Dont want powerheads. I think ive got a better plan by breaking it out. I should have done that in the beginning, but I had extra pumps laying around and wanted to use them... Go figure. I guess I sorta over thought this one since that all I seem to do these days.

Sad part is it was all going PERFECT till these last few steps. the pump leaks, the chiller gave up the ghost, so now I can only run the loop pump till I get that resolved. I knew I was going to have heat issues with the garage sump, and the chiller solved that...until now.

Heck, now that ive seen the dart on the tank (use the spare one since the Barracuda was leaking), I may use that one as the return and put big mamu on the closed loop. just wish the seaswirls were on the loop instead of the sump system. but that can be redone another day I guess.



Dont give me any ideas about Larger pumps..

In light of Power Costs. I ran my whole 300gal system with just a reeflo Dart and a manifold to distribute the flow accordingly. It worked great and I can't imagine how much more my bill could have been with two pumps. You may want to take power into the Loop so to speak.

Binford xj8201 ? naw the new xxj8201 is a pressure rated unit and it has 2600 psi at 12,500gph and i would suggest that bad boy . it will be like throttling down the BP oil spill !
 
Actually there is a new pump from Dolphin pumps that has the new lifetime seal that does 6,200 gph at 165W with some crazy head pressure. A friend has one on his return pump and it shakes the pipes when you plug it in! And It's split into four returns...On a 240gal tank only open a fraction of full throttle.
