Right then i wasnt sure where this should go (mods please move if you need to)

1st time im doing a tank build so thought i would share it on here and hope to get some help :)

After having a full reef then a fish only im going to do something new!!

and that is a clown and nem tank !!

Ive been researching this since December now

Nothing is finalized as of yet and may change with your input as people chip in

The idea is to have around 10 to 15 BTA and the same amount of clowns all will be purchased from local breeders of around 2/3 months old possible davinci platinum Picasso mix.

Display will be 1045mm x 572mm x 678mm in 12mm so will be brace less i will be building this my self from salvaged glass from a 300gal system

The volume of this will be 372ltrs..

Undecided on the sump size yet but its looking like

Equipment

Skimmer is a ATI Powercone 200 SI really good skimmer rated this over the deltecs any day

Lights im looking at the evergrow IT2080 which is 800mm long, i think ill got with 120 optics and the lights will be just above the water line

Ive been wanting to try a Santa Monica 100 Acrylic Scrubber for some time now so i have got a DIY Santa Monica 100 Acrylic Scrubber version just need to source some lights for this now. this will take care of PO3 and nitrates without a problem i believe

Heating is a 300w heater but will add a controller to fine tune the heat for the nems.

Return pump is a jeabo 6000 which i already have great pumps i will either T this off to the scrubber

Movement i currently have a WP-60 on my fish only which i will sell and replace with smaller units

Here some images i have been working on

Things im unsure on

sump layout ?

Return line size ? Thinking 25mm

Power head size WP 10/25 or 40 i was think 2 x 25s ?? rated at 8000ltrs each ?

Twin stand pipe size thinking 32mm... the bulk heads i have require a 45mm hole im unsure how close these can be from the edge and each other ??

I'm not clear. How many clowns do you plan on keeping? More than one mated pair of clowns in the same tank is usually a big mistake

Definitely too many clowns unless they are all very young, unmated and haven't switched sexes yet. They will eventually pair up and become aggressive. At best, you will be left with 2 mated pairs in that size tank on each end.

hi thanks for your comments

yes they will be 2 or 3 months old from the same batch... i realize this isn't the norm but can be done

there are a couple of threads similar on here

There is a thread in nem forum that are many from the same clutch, and that would be key, but even that person does have some picking off here and there.
You should be reading and researching in nem forum.

I have a 360g BTA tank and I am going for a breading pair of clowns.

Tried the whole bunch of clowns thing in a 1500g tank and it never really worked out.

Will keep an eye on this thread.

Any pictures of your set up

Why didn't it work ? What age were they when added ? What clowns did you have

They were percs. Juveniles from two batches at the same time. They ended up beating the crap out of the weakest clown one at a time. I don't like watching them suffer.

Here is a pic, the tank used to be SPS dominated but I lost it in a move primarily due to an RO malfunction. I restarted it a few months ago.

Should keep you busy for at least a few minutes :)

Great read mate ...

We're try Percs or occ ?

I'm concerned with PH the tank isn't even built yet but had low ph on the last system

I'm going to have to keep on to of the parameters but BTA shouldn't strip anything like SOS etc

ultra thin weir , the plan was to used 2 x 6mm glass as the back plates machined the the correct size.

The back of one bit of glass would be painted and the the other silicone on to make a backing for the display

The problem is for these 2 x 6mm machine glass is going to cost £120 !!!which im not willing to pay

My queastion is dou you think 1 x 6mm will be storugh enough if suported ? currently the bigest span is 502mm but I could add a back plate in to support it

Tank size is 1000mm x 527 x 700mm ( L X W X H )

At above the tank is made from 12mm glass

cheers

ian

dont know if you have seen it yet but brs is setting up a "harem tank" similar to what you are wanting to do, lots of nems and lots of clowns. Not sure if they have a complete video yet of do's and dont's for this kind of tank yet. But it is possible.

Update

Just wondered if anyone is still tagging along on this build ?

ive had to change to sizes of the tank since im wanting to be brace-less im worried about the 12mm been up to the task

i made a box the same size of the tank to see how it would sit in the front room and with talking to a friend have agreed that i will tip the tank over and change the dimensions to Tank size is 1000mm x 527 x 700mm ( L X H X W ) so the tank is now 700mm wide.....

This will allow me to go with the 12mm glass and give more floor space for the nems and allow better PAR due to the shorter height

I'm still not sure on what to do with the back weir glass

I've been pricing the project up and don't mind sharing this as it will be help full for others to understand the cost involved in this kind of set up

Some of these costs are from equipment i have already purchased or had and a lot of DIY or favors been called in !!

Some update....

The glass how now been ordered and due in on the 30th :)

The glass has unfortunately cost me £250 inc VAT was hoping for less which it would have been less than 200 but the infinity weir is whats costing a fortune, i ended up doing this in 12mm which i will vinale the back of this black this will be exposed to salt water so will cover this in reef safe paint to protect it. ooo and this beast been 12mm weighs 105kg!!

The stand has been built which is very similar to the vertex system no center brace either, this will be covered in MDF this week and sent for painting
