Simple things in life...

Hear me out guys...

I have been in this hobby 15years. Tried it all. SPS only, LPS only, softies, non photo, you name it.

Have tried all forms of filtration, from bio-pellets to Zeovit to Agae Scrubber (my favorite). Hang on filters, all in ones, basement sumps, huge refuguiums..

All I ever wanted was a pair of clowns that would be hosted by a bubble tip. I have tried all color bubble tips, I've had some the size of basketballs. I've had all types of perculas and ocellaris, wild, tank bred, designer clowns, you name it. And they would NEVER go in the anemone for me.

I bought a pair once that was hosting at the store, I put them in and seven months later they wanted nothing to do with the nem.. nothing.

I paid $250 for a big onyx that was hosting at a friends house, put her in, and she jumped into the overflow and was killed.

Finally, I gave in a bought a clarki clown. I don't like other clowns other than perculas, but I figured I would make an exception so It would host.. and It did! for a day. It had a parasite, not only did it die, but It killed my entire fish population.

I have tried playing video of nems hosting clowns in front of the tank, pictures of nems hosting clowns, and have tried confining the clowns to a bowl with the nem for a few hours... NOTHING.

Two days ago I bought a ten gallon nuvo, a small pair of onyx clowns and a rose bubble tip. Something was wrong and the tank got supper clowdy, the nem closed up and looked pretty much dead. The clowns were swiming funny and not eating... so I said thats it, everything is dead. I'm done with this hobby.

I did a 90% waterchange, removed the filter media and just ran a little carbon, I figured if I save the clowns I will find them a good home.

Two days later, I walk into my house and you wouldn't believe it, the clowns are hosting the anemone.

After all these years of no luck, and a tank that was a goner I FINALLY have an RBTA hosting a pair of Onyx clowns.. My two favorite creatures of the sea.

simple things in life...

Thanks for listening.. lol

Congrats man. Although you could have avoided a lot of that trouble by trying a natural host anemone for percs -- magnifica, gigantea, mertensi or crispa.

+1

I find that a Magnifica or a Gigantea are the equivalent of catnip for cats. Perculas, Ocellaris and Skunks can't resist.

Congrad!!!!!

But I don't know why you stick to BTA. As experienced as you are, Crispa, Malu, Magnifica or Gigantea would be the anemones to get.
Get rid of that BTA and get a Magnifica or Gigantea.
You have not see symbiotic relationship until you see one of the smaller clown fish in his natural host.

Well, I don't really like carpets or other anemones really. And after doing research on how difficult it was to keep a Magnifica, I opted not to keep one.

Here is a crapy iphone pic of the Onyx being hosted. The nem still looks beat up, but it is definitely improving.
