Single halide aquariums

hi funky fish14 , thanks.
the light combo is a coralvue electronic ballast with a reeflux 400w lamp. i tried the 12k but it was too blue for me. the tank is 4x2x2.
i also have an actinc t8 for before and after but im going to build a unit for some led spots which will aim up into the reflector, which will hopefully spread the light a bit.

Awesome! Thanks for the info!

Great tanks to everyone else as well!

That is an aquarium to be proud of. How do you like the bulb you are running now compared to the megachrome? How has the growth been for you.

Thanks.
the tank wasn't looking good at the time of the Giesemann. Too many factors: magnetic ballast, softies mixed with stonies, and simple (rushed) tank move blues,...It has finally stabilized over the last couple of months. I've corrected most of those problems and the growth has been decent. A CR would def help.

I could not agree with you more about the calcium reactor. I have been using the Schuran Jetstream 1 for some time now and love it. If your limited on space its nice because of how its mounted on the plastic board you can fix it to a wall in your stand.

So you use no supplementation as far as lighting goes? Are you thinking of adding something later or just going to stick it out with halide only..

I can't fit anything under the stand anymore. So no CR...
No supp lighting since I have a Mini Lumenarc in the canopy. I knew the tank set up is not ideal, I just had to live with its shortcomings. Heck, it got up to 85 degrees quite regularly in the summer because my fans couldn't move enough air.

Here is my set up 4x4x2 240g with single metal halide on light mover

oh snap...awesome tank reefer! mdt as well...

i don't have any decent current pics but i also have a single 250DE (maristar fixture with supplemental t5 actinics) over my 58g (36L x 18W x 2x H) i love it for efficiency purposes, and my mixed reef is doing very well-sps included...

i think sptfire makes a good point about the benefits of multiple point sources of light (mult bulbs)...not that sps cannot do well with a single halide (obviously after viewing this thread)...

Twins Guy,

Come on..... We need a pic! :D I am setting up a 58g with a 400w metal halide and would like to see what yours looks like.

Great tanks everyone, I've enjoyed looking at this thread.

wait, tankreefer, are you using a light rail that's motor powered?

where can I get one? I'm thinking of mounting my mh on one as well.

thanks

i've found the solution to us single halide users:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ...&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1

This saves a whole ton of money. Instead of spending say $600 for a dual halide + actinic pendant (just an average) over an open top tank (thus no crude retrofits), just spend the $250 on a single 250watt hqi, get a $200 light rail, saving you some money up front, and energy costs in the long run. Less wattage, less electricity on the light, less heat on the tank, less use of the chiller =)

the rails look a bit tacky themselves, probably need a coat of white paint.

My tank has been up since July 29 2006. The picture was taking on July 29 right after i have the light hook up. I like my lighting setup, i don't want to have too many pendant hanging over the top. Here is some pic of my tank in Nov

That tank is inspiring to look at. There is so much potential with the aquascape and you killed it with the equipment. Very well done.
I bet you cant wait till its set up a little longer, lots of room for corals to grow around one another, and we all know Cali has all the hot colorful corals to fill your tank with. It looks like the results are nothing but positive with the 1000 watt halide and light mover. Good color as well as growth, Right?
Im very close to getting back in the SPS game for myself and will be keeping and eye on this tank for sure.
