Single halide aquariums

pasenah, now that's what I'm talkin' about! We need to get on the trimless tank train here in the U.S. It is the norm in Europe, I don't know why it hasn't caught on here.
Your lighting scheme is ideal IMO, I like to have areas with less light to allow for more variety. Every inch of tank doesn't need to be blasted with light, although it looks like you get good coverage with your light.

thanks ,
i dont think its too popular to have no trim over here and the wife keeps bugging me to cover it but im with you and like it as it is.
i like to have it a bit darker at the edges for the lps but as you say , its pretty well covered.
cheers
ben

Heres my 40g breeder.

I Have that same setup but with a pheonix 14k bulb, great bang for the buck!!

sorry no pics but I have one 400watt halide on a 55 long(48 by 12) and I keep almost all sps.It can be done but you need to use supplemental lighting because the edges get dim.HTH

I'm setting up a Maristar 250watt HQI w/ 14K Phoenix and 2x24watt T5 actinics over a 36" x 20" x 22" trimless/braceless so it'll be completely open top without a canopy =)

I'm hoping it will provide enough coverage as well. I'll have most of the rockwork in the middle of the tank, avoiding the sides so no corals will really exist over there anyway.

It's in the living room, near the TV, so I don't want light spilling all over the place.

heres my 4foot with a 400w lumenarc

pasenah:

Gogeous tank! I love it! Great lighting too! What bulb/ballast combination are you using? What are your tank dimensions?

My next tank will be lit very similarly, a Lumenarc III with a 400W bulb, but I'll be adding two 48" T5's for supplemental blue lighting. Outside tank dimensions will be 54" x 24" x 20" Tall, but the actual inside of the tank (as the last 6" are overflow space) will be 48" long.

No pics yet unfortunately... :( I'm ordering the tank this week!

hi funky fish14 , thanks.
the light combo is a coralvue electronic ballast with a reeflux 400w lamp. i tried the 12k but it was too blue for me. the tank is 4x2x2.
i also have an actinc t8 for before and after but im going to build a unit for some led spots which will aim up into the reflector, which will hopefully spread the light a bit.

My last tank was 24" long (and 28" high) and was lit by a single 250 watt DE metal halide. The corals had great color from the top, but very poor color from the bottom, and in some cases even died off from underneath because of a lack of light.

IMO more than 1 point of light is needed for SPS to really do well.
