So I want to a tang for my 120g. I am really wanting a lavender tang...
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+1445&pcatid=1445

I realize this tank may not be the right size but was curious what the tang police had to say since this will be the only tang in the tank.

That's option 1!

Option 2. I go the two spot tang route
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+43+2628&pcatid=2628

Also considering a tomini tang instead..

With this route I would also like to ask if I could do a 2nd tang? Suggestions on a 2nd IF!!! you feel it could be done?

EDIT this is in reef discussion as thisbwill be a reef tank and want a tang thay will do well.
Thanks all! Any other tangs to consider solo for a 120g?

Not too fond of kole... would rather do two spot or tomini.

Are there issues with either of those? Are you saying no to lavender tang?..

I was in your shoes a couple months ago. It didn't make sense that they would differentiate between 120, and 125 gallon tanks for minimum sizes. Like, what fish notices 5 gallons difference? I thinks it's because they are using the standard aquarium dimensions. An off the shelf 120 is 4 feet long and wider, and a 125 is six feet long and narrower. I can see how that would make a real difference to a fish that is evolved to swim fast and far in nature. If those 5 extra gallons = 2 feet of swimming before you have to turn around and go back, it makes more sense that it'd be noticeable. And if you think of it as a loop, that's 4 extra feet - a whole nother 120!

Have you seen the Scopas tangs? They look like the ones you like, and also have a good rep for easy care. I think a tomini would be fine. Lavender is harder to say, idk if they are a newer fish or a new name for an old fish or what but you don't see as much info on them.

I wound up with a kole, after really considering a powder blue. I feel so much like I made the right decision. I find it far more pleasurable to watch a happy, healthy fish swim around in more tank than he needs, than I would get from a fussy half-sick high-maintenance one. I was not up for that challenge :)

Any of those fish will be fine in a 120. Just make sure you have a lot of low, that is just as important as tank size IMHO. Tangs are great in reefs, I think that they are better than FOWLER's for tangs. Just don't put him in first if you plan on adding more small fish.

My lieutenant tang is absolutely the most amazing fish I have. Even comes up and nibbles my hands when I put them in begging for food. Follows me around like a dog. Great fish, and don't get too large, and BEAUTIFUL coloration.

They get up to 10 inches that's pretty big to me

Mines about 7-8 inches and he might grow another 1 inch or so once he gets his full streamers in. But overall that's relatively small for a tang besides the bristletooth tangs and purple/yellow.

My Tomini Tang is a solid 6-7 inches but he's probably capped out in growth.

I have a Tomini in my 120. It is constantly swimming around picking at bits of algae here and there. IMHO, a great size for a 120.

I love my Kole. It's fat, really fat. He'd love a tank that size. He's cramped in a 75 right now.

What about a white cheek?

Edit:
I know you said you wanted a tang, but have you considered a rabbit?

Yes I get all that! Some people don't realize how much 2ft is for a fish swimming around! Thank you for the comment though!!

I love those fish but figured it was too big... I think I would rather lean the lavender tang route though if I was going to get a tang on the borderline for a 120/125

Great to hear! Thanks for the comment!

I have no looked at the white cheek for consideration... I have looked them up before though and liked them! Rabbit no... haven't thought of one of those! Here is the list I am thinking about for stocking

1. Lavender Tang
2. Copperband Butterfly (still need to look into this for reef.. I have aptasia now not sure if my new peppermint shrimp will clear it or if I need the copperband..)
3. 5-6 Chromis
4. 2 cardinals
5. Pair of clowns
6. Blenny.. not sure on which
7. Exquisite Fairy Wrasse

The lavender I think would do ok. I don't have any personal experience with that species though, so I could be wrong. Just looking up the size it only looks like they get ~8-10 inches or so.

I'd pass on the chromis, eventually they go highlander and just one remains. If you want some pretty schoolers look into some anthias, you have plenty of room.

The cardinals might have a rough time with the current your tang will need. It depends though on if there are any spots they can hang out in. They aren't the best swimmers.

Clowns would be fine

Lots of good blennys out there, if you are after something different, there are a few fang blennys that are interesting, or you could Go with the standard lawnmower or starry.

The fairy wrasse would be fine.

I personally will never put another damsel in any tank of mine again :debi:

as far as the tangs, any 1 would be great for a 120, just don't get a big one. get a small one and let him grow.

if you want 2 tangs, that's ok as well, just buy them small and introduce them to the tank together. if you add one and then wait and get another one, the first will have already established his turf and will fight for his home. the new fish will have no turf and will most likely stress and die, or fight like heck and they could both stress and die.

but really, I think you should buy a new tank, at least 23 ft long and 7 ft deep if you want to keep a tang! right? right? maybe even just buy a tang and donate him to the public aquarium so you can go visit him every day or so! :headwallblue: sarcasm much? lol

I have a blue eye 2 spot bristletooth in my 120g as my only tang and algae grazer, what a work horse that thing is, even grooms the sand bed keeping it pretty clean.

This is my 2nd favorite tang after a naso, and almost identical in personality, but they get just a hair too big for me to have one in my 120g IMO

Why no damsels??

Also pretty sure I am going to go with Lavender Tang. He gets 7-8inches at full.. seems like him solo would be ok. my aquascape is centered with tons of caves that I specifically made and the the entire outside is open to cruise the tang! Might try to get a picture.

Still not sure... ahhhh White Cheek, Lavender or 2 Spot :X can't make up my mind!! lol not ordering anytime soon tho so i got some time lol
