Usually, i make custom aquarium between 150 to 300 gallons.

But this time, somebody ask to me to built a six feet high aquarium !!!

I need if somebody saw or listen talking about this.

The thickness of the glass to use (1" or 1½" inch ?)

If the lighting available on the market (métal-halide 400 w ) is strong an off to make opening easy corals (soft and LPS)

I think 1.5" would not be thick enough for 6'

I know John Turner from RAS/ORA has done a few tanks that size... youre talking boku bucks here.... he said one installation he did recently that I remember was 6' tall cost about $170,000. He used laminate glass... something like 2" thick. You can contact him... he knows how to handle the BIG projects.

you will need laminate glass. and that gets very expensive. i would bet the recomended thickness would be 2" for a tank thats 6ft tall.

The thickness will also vary depending on the length of the tank, so the 6' height is not enough information - what are the other dimensions?

The complete dimension are : 48" long x 24" large

Two possibility for deep : 70" high is minimin but 96" if is possible

Why such a deep tank for that short of length and width? If your making a tank like that, why not make the 6' part the bottom and go shallow? That would be better for the corals with getting light! You could make the bottom 96x48, and then the sides 24" tall! That would be a nice sized reef right there, and you wouldn't need so much in thickness!

I know that is better larger than taller. I did a lot of aquarium of the dimensions around 96" long x 30" large and just 42" high.

But this time, the customer want 6 feet high minimun

I would actually recommend looking into blast resistant type glass products (hurricane type stuff). Good companies to check into are Oldcastle Glass (I use their Perrysburg, Ohio office, usually the best prices) or Global Security Glazing. What they will want to know is the type of pressure being applied. They will most likely recommend a series of laminates using 3/4" heat strengthened glass with .060 clear interlayers up to around 1 1/2" in total thickness. No matter what, you are talking serious dollars here as custom laminated glass in thicknesses like that are not inexpensive.

whatever glass you use, your going to need 1000w halides to light that bad boy.

Depends on what and where he plans to keep stuff. Turner might be a little 'old school' with some of his opinions, but he has put just 400s on tanks that tall before... if all you plan to grow down below is shrooms and leathers, and then work into SPS/LPS up top... no need for 1000s. But if he plans on putting clams on the bottom... then yeah... 1000s are an idea.

Sure, he is one of the founders of ORA, now stays on the board of directors, and now runs RAS... which is pretty much a high-end custom installation aquarium business. If by 'join him' you mean 'get to work with' >>Im sure he is taking employment apps...lol. I know he doesnt spend much time on RC, if any, because he is busy showing rich people how to spend their money (like on $170,000 reef tanks), but I know if you contact him, he's very helpful.

Im sorry, I keep calling him John... its Jeff... for some reason, I cant get his first name right ever, and its not like I havent met the guy...lol.

http://www.reefaquariadesign.com/about.html look at his portfolio and you get an idea reaaal quick... his reefs are featured in books like Fossa and Nilsen's 'The Most beautiful Aquariums of the World'.

Hes one of the only people I know that knows where to get starphire glass bent and laminated...lol... and I had to beg for him to tell me where. The only problem getting a hold of him is that he might be on location somewhere... many of his projects require him to do on-site contracting (like getting a forklift or crane to get a tank in before the house/building is finished and too late). And it is a business, so giving out info to the competition isnt exactly his favorite, unless hes talking at a presentation or something (then its advertising)... but he is a nice guy.
