The largest of all stomatopods are Lysiosquillina maculata (38 cm), Harpiosquilla harpax (26 cm), Bathysquilla crassispinosa (28 cm) and Hemisquilla californiensis (31 cm). Of these. Lm is occasionally available from importers. H. h is commonly eaten in Asia and I have seen it in markets in the U.S.. B.c. is extremely rare and comes from very deep (300 m+). Temperature would be a problem. H. c. is commonly available in the spring in fish markets in southern California. Only H. c is a smasher and it is very prone to a fungus disease. Also, it requires water around 17 C.
