Skilter filter decent & quiet

Trying to find me a filter/skimmer for my 20g long I am planning on starting up. Not going to be a reef, just some live rock. Though I may add a few non-photosynthic things like tube corals. Is the Skilter filter any good? Also is it quiet, as this tank is right across from my bed.

No. It is a decent side filter but a poor skimmer and in stock form its very noisy. You can do a search here on RC for some of my tips on how to improve it and make it work fairly well but my advice is if you don't already have it don't go out and buy a new one. There are better filters and skimmers but its hard to make one that does both well.

An Aqua C Remora would do well on a tank that size.

Just so expensive. Anything else ya'll would recommend? Is the Red Sea Prizm anything good?

Thanks.

Nothing in the same price range as the Skilter wil work very well. I have owned several Skilters, both a Prizm and Prizm Pro Deluxe, Seaclone, Jebo and a CPR BakPak II and none are anything to write home about in stock form. All can be improved upon but I would suggest getting something better to begin with. Keep an eye on the used forum here and post a "want to buy" and someone will pop up with a good used deal, they always do!

Yeah I've heard good about the Marine Typhoon. Is it noisy? I've also have heard good about the Rio Nano Skimmer. Just for some reason I don't want to give it a try.

The typhoon is not particularly noisy, I can here it from about 10 feet away, but it is just a "bubbling" sound, nothing terrible or particulary loud. I have one in my classroom (I am teacher) and no one has mentioned it being loud.

How much skim does the Typhoon collect?

My typhoon I just added to a tank in my classroom collects about a liter a day of wet skimmate from my 55 fowlr with a huma huma, yellow tang and a blue damsel. From what I have seen I would go with the typhoon over the CSS65 and for $68 it is a great buy:) (drfosters).

Typhoon Collects a Quart a Day?

A liter is 1.06 quarts. What is the quality of skim? How long is your drain tube and how do you hang the collection bottle?

A quart a day blows away most of the skimmers we hear about! That definitely wins the prize for top HOB/HOT skimmer.

You should post a picture in the near future.

Sorry about not being specific, it actually collects 24 onces of skimmate a day (a 24 ounce pepsi bottle full), which is about 700ml , or .7 liters. The quality is wet and fairly smelly, not as thick as my ASM or tunze, but thicker and more odiferous than my saphire nano skimmer. I have a four foot tube that drains into a pepsi bottle that is in a bucket (not pretty, but this is a classroom working tank not a display per se). In comparison to my friends remora pro it pulls more out more often and is easier to use, the quality of the skimmate is about the same, maybe a little "wetter". I will try to get a pic up this weekend.
