Hi Roger,
I appreciate the answers to my skimmer questions a couple of weeks ago on the differences between the Comline [in-tank use] and the Automatic & System [sump use] units.
Since the "up to 47G" sump unit was discontinued, I bought the Comline 3110/2 skimmer for ultimate use in a sump, figuring I'd just section off an area to provide the minimum 7.1 to 8.7" depth required. I knew I'd have to use a baffle anyway to provide a level raw water source from the aquarium overflow.
At the moment though, without a sump available, I thought I'd test the 3110/2 out and barely managed to squeeze it in place temporarily in my dinky aquarium with lots of live rock and DSB. A couple of questions come to mind.
One, if memory serves correct (I'm at work), one of the two manuals suggested that the air adjustment screw be closed, then backed off three turns. I tried this at three full turns as opposed to three half turns. But, I have seen a remark from Anthony Calfo on WWM, who has used Tunze skimmers a lot, to leave it full open and adjust height level [lower if too dry, raise if too wet]. Either way, it's not producing yet, and since it's difficult to get in and out of the tank, I thought I'd ask you for your opinion of ballpark adjustment. It is way too loud in any setting, but adjusting the screw yields anything from no bubbles to loud gurgles to bubbling gurgles to fine mist & gurgles to a bit quieter fine mist spray. Which of these is more likely near correct setting? I realize that it may take a little while to "break-in", although I have also seen general comments that it's really the owner that needs to get broken in!
Second, although I did not find it mentioned (one problem with the manuals is that they are trying to be applicable to all models and it gets a little confusing finding what's what) as to how high above the water the top of the unit should be, I looked at one of the difficult-to-read pictures and seem to see a marking of 0 to 20mm from the top. Is there a water level mark that I have missed? It would make it so much easier to adjust. Or should I measure and mark 7.1 to 8.7" up from the bottom of the skimmer?
Thank you!
~Brent
