Skimmer choice for 120G heavy load?

I am debating between Coral Box Cloud C9 DC and Bubble Magus A9.

Which one should I choose or do I have better options under $500?

Thanks

Best skimmer on the market -SKIMZ...

If I were you i would go with the Skmiz Monzter 163 DC Series for your 120.. They are so quiet you can even tell they are running.. The water that trickles down your Overflow boxes is louder then the pump running full blast. The skimmer has a killer controller, feeding mode and a couple of other options. Also, if something breaks on the skimmer, pump, or any part on it etc etc you don't have to deal with the MFG in TAIWAN you deal directly with Bulk Reef Supply which no other SKIMMER in the world does that FYI.. Example something was not working currently with my pump and BRS had a brand new Skimz at my front door in 2 days.. I have been in this industry for over 25 years and have owned quite a few skimmers in my time. I have owned a Reef Octopus, Vortex, Deltec, Bubble Magnus and the Skimz blows them all away. Not to mentioned they are priced very reasonable. I have a 120 and my Skimz Monster DC 163 Series are rated for tanks up to 250 gallons. They make a couple of different series but for my tank and specs the Monzter 163 DC was the best fit for my tank.. i ADDED A LINK FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT THE DIFFERENT KINDS THEY MAKE..

Sounds good, do you know what's the +1 size of Skimz 163?

Form personal experience, If you like a loud and noise skimmer I would recommend going with the Vertex!!! Built like a tank but very noise skimmer.. I prefer a skimmer that performs as good or not better and a pump that runs literally silent where you can't even tell it's running!! but you know what they say - different strokes for different folks..

I vote for the Skimz skimmers. The build quality isn't as top-notch as the Vertex but it's great value for the money and BRS recommended tank sizes are trustworthy. I broke the gate valve handle but BRS sent the replacement part to me 2 day no questions asked. (BRS has my money forever. They didn't even ask any questions - "ok sir, we can take care of that for you, I see your calling from number xxxxx, is your address this? we'll have one shipped out ASAP")

I'm running the 163 in a heavy stocked 75 gallon reef with 12 fish including tangs (I know, I know) I dose 5ml of vinegar/vodka a day with 0 nitrates. I do a water change every 6 to 8 weeks. I'm sure the skimmer is a big part of the 0 nitrates.

The system gets fed a ton to reduce the aggression. I feed 2 cubes of mysis, flakes and pellets per day along with 2 sheets of nori every other day.

I just took the attached picture.

EDIt: for anyone asking the refugium you see on the right has approximately 3 gallons of water and is used as a breeding place for pods for my dragonet.

My lfs said in their experiene the skimz skkmmers have been finicky and are junk. Theyve never steered me wrong before but the guy selling the atb skimmer has a point, i have to agree, one of the best skimmers ive also used as well and ive used everything from a remora aqua c to bubble king supermarin 300

To me, bubbles are bubbles. They are all well designed and do the job. You just need to pick one that's the right size. Otherwise, it doesn't make much difference.

I heard this before, then I decided to try it for myself because I saw it on the BRS 160 series.

The Skimz 163 is the 2nd Skimz skimmer I used this year. I used the Skimz SM162 external skimmer but had to sell it because I needed more sump space.

This is my third skimmer I'm using on the tank this year. I used the Vertex Omega 150 - it was great, build quality and attention to detail were excellent - but the tank is in my living room next and I couldn't quiet the AC pump enough. It was annoying my wife.

The skimz 162 worked great, it was a little quieter, but then I need to run the refugium and had no space. Now with the Skimz 163, I hear nothing and it's still skimming great. I'm typing this at 3:14 am about 5 feet away from the tank and I can't hear anything. I hear the xbox humming louder than the tank.

Thanks guys, I think I am more interested in the newer and cheaper DC skimmers like bubble magus, coral box, or simplicity etc. it has to be quiet and that's why I chose DC pump.

I get the quiet of a D.C. Pump. I actually went that direction with return pumps and it does make a difference. The ATB is very quiet and is worth a look IMO but it's of course your call. Skimmer performance should be seriously considered as well as noise levels. ATB has both of these and is the reason I recommend. Good luck with your decision.

My ATB is dead silent! Best Skimmer I have ever had , I've had many.. no turbulence inside Skimmer with the double bubble plate , amazing Skimmer

Agreed, cabinet drawers closed can hear no skimmer, and skims very well.

I think noise acceptance is different for everyone. The Vertex Omega 150 was a great skimmer for me but the hum from the pump was too much. The SKimz using the DC pump is dead silent.

I run a Bubble king double cone on my 240 with 30 fish in it. Skimmer is built unlike many others and dead silent. It's a pure beast. And they have support here in the US and Slief is part of the team and he is VERY active on this forum. Thus meaning any issues you can easily contact him. Ask any BK owner how they feel about the build quality of the skimmer and the pump. Not too mention ease of set up
