Hey guys, I'm planning on making a new sump to hold a bigger skimmer and a bigger refugium. I need some help deciding which skimmer I should get for a 50 gallon cube. I'm planning on going towards a SPS dominated tank. So I will definitely 1 up the skimmer.

I also don't know which one runs more efficiently. Are cone skimmers better?
My choices are:

SWC Extreme 160 Cone Skimmer: http://www.saltwaterconnection.com/...id=116&zenid=665b4d889f9390e944a62af500cafec0

Hi, I have a SWC 150BMK on my 90 SPS tank and it is doing fine, you may want to put that in list. Other than that, go with the 160 cone. I had a Reef Octopus XS-200 skimmer on it with an 8 inch body and PSK-1000 pump, it was way overkill and put the SWC in. My 90 SPS tank is 100% SPS, with zero softies and zero LPS, only a couple of fish, but am adding more fish very soon.

I also have a Geo Kalk reactor for all makeup water and a Deltec reactor with bio-pellets, a new carbon reactor is being added next week. My chemicals are BRS two part (Cal, Alk, Mag), which is weird, they should call it three part.

^Thanks for the info but I can't edit the poll.
I'll see what I can get out of this poll first.

I was told by one of the reps at coralvue that the extreme 160 xs would not perform consistently(neck too big) on my future tank(40br w/20+ gal sump) so it might be a bit much for a 50.

I just got the SWC 160 cone with "upgraded" impeller and large cup. So far this thing rocks! I have only had it running 10 days and had to empty twice. I mainly have SPS as well.

I have the SWC 160 cone in my 90g and I'm more than happy. I previously had an octopus skimmer DDNW 150 and it wasn't as good as the SWC cone 160. :spin1:

I made my choice on the Reef Octopus but I just came the Super Reef Octopus XP1000 Space Saver SRO XP1000SSS.
Would this skimmer be better for a sps dominated tank than the Reef Octopus Extreme XS 160?

You could save a about 20 bucks and get more reaction time with the non-sss sro1000... it just takes up a little more space.
