I've been looking for a skimmer to put in the sump I'm planning on building for my 220g tank. Funds are limited so I'm trying to get a good but cheap item. Also my stand is only 24 inches tall, so that's a problem too. So far I've found these 2 at reasonable prices, please teel me which one you think is the best choice and why. Feel free to post any other comparable items, or if you have a used one that one to sell.

Any of the 2 following skimmers I can get for around $115.00 shipping includeed.

TurboFlotor 1000 Protein Skimmer

This Venturi Skimmer effectively removes dissolved organic waste before they break down - reduces nitrate concentration and raises oxygen level. Utilizes a Needle Wheel pump to draw water directly from the aquarium or sump, mix it with air, and crash the mixture into the skimmer. Creates extremely high turbulence in the lower part of the skimmer to ensure a very high mixture of air is injected. Upper portion of skimmer stays calm to allow a longer reaction time for bubbles to react with organic wastes and form stable, dry foam. The Turboflotor 1000 (measures 6-5/8" x 10" x 21-3/4" high) is designed for the sump using water directly from the pre-filter. If not using water feed from an overflow box, remove the standpipe so the water is fed from the sump. Bubble foam is collected in a patented conical cup. A ball valve is recommended on the intake. The recommended pump is the Oceanrunner (not included). For aquariums up to 250 gallons.

The item is new but without manufacturer''s box. All parts and User Manual are included.

Neither are adequate for a 220g tank. The turbofloater doesn't come with a pump either. I suggest saving more cash and going with something that won't waste your money.

Dram,

Look in the used section. Someone's selling a Reeflo 200 for $550.. :) Would be on the border, but I think you can get away with it. If not, go to PA, they're selling new ones for $599.

Look for a skimmer rated for at least double your tanks rating. I would look into the octopus/ MSX line of skimmers

Save your money and don't buy either. There are lots of options and those two shouldn't be one of them.

If money is an issue buy a used ASM or Euroreef. Both work good and can be found regularly for decent prices.

If you can come up with a little more dough and want a new skimmer, look into Octopus/MSX extreme line of skimmers and Vertex skimmers. Really good skimmers for affordable prices.

I also have to agree that neither of those skimmers are any good, a protein skimmer is one of the main sources of filtration for your tank and I believe that you get what you pay for, I would get the msx 250a cone

You should splurge on your skimmer, and spend less on other things.

Buy the Reeflo 200, it will do a good job on your tank. For $599 you ae getting something that won't need to be replaced.

Or the MSX extreme 250. Depending if you want an internal or external skimmer.

Get a good skimmer, i agree with the above, neither of the two you have listed will work. A skimmer will make a huge difference in a tank that size. I have owned 3 skimmers in 5 years.
$200 POS
$500 MRC MR-2R
$1400 BK SM200

I can tell you from my own experience, a good skimmer will make your life much easier. I empty the BK every day, sometimes every other day. Its full, and it stinks. The other skimmers i listed worked, but no where in the same ball park. As mentioned above.
Reeflo
Octopus
I would add to the list a BK. They are expensive, but they work so good!

Neither of the two are nor sufficient for your size of the tank, The turboflotor barely works well on a 100g heavily loaded. Look intoOctopus/MSX extreme line of skimmers, you won't regret !!

Thanks to everyone who tried to help, but $500.00 is a lot of money for me. I don't think I'll have that kind of money to spend on a skimmer in the near future, that's why I'm trying to go with a cheaper option. At this point I don't have more than $200.00 to spend on the skimmer, so I either get one of these or I don't get anything. what about the Berlin XL? They are rated up to 400.00g

Dont spend your money if you cant afford the right skimmer. You really need a good skimmer for that size of a tank. One other thing to watch out for is power draw, or multiple pump skimmers. You want to keep the electric draw low. Save your money, but its much easier to cure LR and get the tank cycled if you have a good skimmer. Its the backbone to any system.

I-techs look very nice also, the body price for a small is 300$ and the medium body price is 400$ but thats without a pump and the pump is the most important part, but they are a heck of alot cheaper than ATB. If you are setting up a 220 dont expect to pay under 2000$ if you want to keep any SPS

I just got a Aqua Euro 250, reated for 250 gallong, it has 2 needle wheel pumps, 13 x 10 footprint, big collection cup and can be bought online for under $300 new, I paid more locally, but needed to get it quickly. It works like a bear, easy to set up and set ups like the ASM's

under 2k for a 220 completely set up??? I would sure like to know how to accomplish that, I spent $1500 for my RR 210 with oak stand, canopy and 40 gal sump w/ mag pump. It also came with about 150-160 lbs LR and about 200 lbs of LS, a Humu trigger, a yellow tang, 3 damsels and 2 perc clowns, I added the skimmer for $350 and 150 lbs LR I already had in anothe tank which cost me over $1000, I also added 2 korlia 4 powerheads so the total investment is about $2200, I still need to get proper lighting ($750 at least) and still have not added 1 coral, so by the time is all said and done, it will be closer to $4k at least even buying mostly frags and only a couple larger pieces and I got a deal on the original set up used. I priced out the tank, stand, canopy and sump new and it would have been $2500 alone, no pumps, skimmer, etc. That being said, I am in Chicago and I know markets have different prices but to set up a 220 for under or even at $2k in my area is impossible, LR sells for $8-10+ per lb alone.
