I used the brs putty only 2 ounces. Made my whole tank smell and skimmer has be overflowing since Sunday. Anyone else have this experience and what did you do to stop it

I had this for a month. My situation was a bit different as I had a new tank, new skimmer and little life/corals in my tank.

I was recommended to do a 50% water change and place a plastic bag over the skimmer so the tiny bubbles stopped making a salt mess.
Hopefully it will be a shorter issue with your situation.

Yours lasted for 3 a month You have got to be joking. It was a 2 ounce piece I have 620 gallons of water. Pretty hard to do 50 percent water change

I used instant ocean putty for the past 7 years and never experience skimmer over flow because of it. I recalled that I used a whole stick once too. perhaps, my skimmer is not that sensitive.
Maybe your skimmer's venturi valve happen to coincidentally clogged while you are using the putty? Worth checking the pump. Most I heard was only a few hours - half a day of over flow after using putty and should be back to normal after whatever in the putty that causes the skimmer to go nut.

Yes I never heard if this long. But the putty did make my basement smell like burnt something and I didn't even use it in those tanks. Used it upstairs

I used the one that came in brs frag pack. I used them before never had this happen. This one was also very wet.

No excuses :p

Give it a thorough cleaning and put it back.. I don't know what skimmer you have so I don't know if you can easily access the inside to wipe down all surfaces,etc.. if not a soaking may be in order.

I Have the nyos quantum 220 skimmer. So Yes I can easily access inside of it. It's pretty big skimmer, so soaking it will be a pain in the butt. So Will try to wipe it first.

I just used some of the putty to secure some frags and my skimmer always overflows for a day or so after I use it. Just open the valve a little on the skimmer until it stops overflowing and then adjust again the following day to resume normal skimming.

And yes it smells like burnt hair. . . Usually just when mixing it though

I have used whole sticks at a time of JB Waterweld and never had this issue.

I would clean the skimmer well and see if that helps.

I did. Problem now is I can't get the skimmer to go back. I can get If to overflow but can't get it to bubble. Or I can get it to bubble but it overflows. Also bubbles come out of the bottom this way too. Will ask my lfs guy to cone check it out. I am good with fish and corals. Not so good with the eauipment

Just an update. After 7 days it finally just fixed itself. Very strange maybe the putty was a bad batch. It was more oily then usual the putty. Well all back to normal. My nitrates did go from 2ppm to 10ppm In a week but it could of been worse

I stopped using that putty cause it always made my skimmer go nuts. I now use Water Weld. It is the same company that makes JB Weld and I get it at home depot/lowes. ITs great stuff and doesn't make my skimmer go nuts.
