Skimmer placement question.

Gives Bad Advice.
I'm looking to replace my Eshopps PSK but the problem that I'm having is that my sump's first chamber is 7.5x11.5". The skimmers that I'm interested in have foot prints slightly larger than that. Can I place my skimmer in with my refugium section? There's live sand and cheato in there.

I'm leaning on the "not a good idea" side.

My tank is a 60gal cube and stand. I'm not sure of what sump I have but it's longer and pokes through a small cut out in the back of the tank. I have about 80gal of water volume and was looking to pick something up in the 150 rated range.

Thanks in advance.

You don't want to oversize unless your tank is over stocked. Go with a skimmer rated for your display tank, as that is what is creating the bioload, not the sump or refugium.

As far as placement, it does not matter where you place the skimmer honestly.
