skimmer placement

what is the best placement like the title says, referring to how deep it sits in the sump?
Ive seen people with theirs sitting on the bottom and iv also seen peeps put theirs on stands. does it make a difference?

i have a Berlin skimmer with a Rio+1700 (about 650gph). i do not have a auto top off so the level would fluctuate 2-3 inches. i noticed the skimmer would work sometimes and not others based on how the water level was.
sump is a AGA model 1. which i just remodeled. i drilled a hole near the top, put a bulkhead and drain in to a 10g sitting next to it. now the water in the first part where my skimmer is, stays constant.
so now do i leave it on the floor submerged almost to the outputs or should i put it on a stand? how tall of a stand?

any advice help or a point in the right direction is appreciated.
thanks. randy

Some skimmer manufacturers will tell you abought how deep the skimmer should be in the water for optimal performance.

If the skimmer is skimming to wet, and you cant get it to skim dryer you need to lift it up in the water.

If you cannt get the water level high a nuff for the skimmer to skim than you need to put it deeper in the water.

You are really gonna need to get an auto top off or some sumps are designed with a part of the sump where the water level does not change, with the constant fluctuation of water level where your skimmer sits is going to constantly change its setting, usually you want the bubbles to stop just above the bottom of the cup, with your water level changing it will push it up and down. I think most skimmers say to place them in about 8 - 10" of water, thats about where I run mine.
