I never understand why this whole cmommunity likes to focus on pinwheel / mesh skimmers for the past fiver years.

If you have a tank that is 90 G plus you should be considering a Beckett designed skimmer.

Remember, almost all all commercial aquaria use Beckett skimmers ! Why ? because they work better.

Yes, they use more energy, (less than your lights), but delivery skimming power like you have never seen or will see with a pin wheel or mesh.

Check out an ETSS or PM Research bullet skimmer.

Then tell these Cylinder Cone Head Air Pin Drivers to get back on SNL :lmao:

Mojo,

I have a 92 gallon corner with a 20 gallon sump (fish only). What would be a good skimmer for my set-up? Also I will be upgrading to a bigger tank (200+ gallon) sometime in the next year.

you wont be able to get a skimmer to work well on both...i would just get the best one for the 90 and sell when you upgrade...swc 160 cone has my vote....right now 246 shipped

That's what I will do, just get one for my present tank...and get a bigger one later. SWC160, I will check it out. Thanks

stan, for a fish only 92 you will be hard pressed to find a skimmer that will work well for both.

for the 92 I jst posted a whole list like 3 posts up as well as for the 200g.


for the small footprint take a look at the aquamaxx am 200-s , atb 840, BM nac 6 or 7. SRO 2000 int.

The super reef octo would be probably the best bet for your money.

i have a buddy that didnt like his bm nac6, so he switched to a swc 160 cone and liked it better even though they use the same pump

Hi Mojo,
I am running a 100 gal mixed reef (some easier SPS) with medium bio load. Total water volume is probably 100 gallons with my 20 gal sump. I am currently running a Vertex IN 250 (gen 2). Its big, loud, and doesn't seem to pull out a ton of skimmate (which is odd given that I dose vodka). First, I am hurting my tank by having this overkill skimmer? Second, which of these skimmers would you recommend as a replacement?

1. New Octopus Extreme 160 (I could tell you are fond of this)
2. SRO XP 1000 SSS (undersized?)
3. BM NAC6A or NAC7

Space and noise is important to me. I'm trying to determine whether it makes sense to spend another $300 on a skimmer.

Didn't see a response so I bit the bullet and bought a skimmer NOT on my list. Hope that SWC 160 cone works well!

its not about how much air you can pull. They arent bad. hopefully you get a good one. I have had many pms from people with pump start up issues.

Are you talking about the atman 2500?

Curious. I wonder what the actual air draw is since you have it clamped off. Have a Dwyer meter handy? Sounds as if the pump IS too much for the body, but what does that matter since it appears to work very well for you.

The only skimmer I have that requires the air to be almost entirely pinched off is an Elos NS500, a venturi-driven skimmer.

regarding the tunze 9410 master DOC skimmer:
Mine is in a 13 x 9 inch chamber

dimensions are:
9.8 L
4.4 W
16.4 H

the aquamaxx is the best bang for your buck. if can get a used deltec then i would go that route
