Skimmer Q&A Thread

Super Reef Octopus XP-5000 External Cone Protein Skimmer
unless your stuck with running a internal, once you take sand and rock displacement away imagine would be less twv, the orca is a beast also, im not a fan of the alpha line, also the ATB 1050 Cone Protein Skimmer wouldnt be a bad choice

my thoughts exactly...

i have a 16G sump and i feel like my bubble magnus nac3 doesnt accomplish much,

but im dealing with limited space and yet to find a skimmer to replace mine

I have a 4 chamber sump i can put it in chamber one or two

fist chamber is 8"x6.5"

Second chamber is 8"x5"

Any suggestions?

The atman 1100 does not move much water or pull much air. Small footprint and good performance would be the skimz 121 or the warner marine 121. Great little units. what size tank is it on ?

mojo what do you think if i cut out the divider for the first and second chamber so its a big first chamber then flows thru the next 2, or not a good idea?

thanks...I've heard differing accounts from people about cone vs sro and ext vs int. My thought would be the cone wouldn't be as big a deal as the SRO semi-cone doesn't seem to offer much resistance for the foam head but that an external pump would benefit from being able to be direct fed from the tank return.

I actually can get a great deal on a used orca 250 but haven't really researched them much, though it seems people generally like them.

its too big to work effectively. The nac 3or 3.5 would be much better

Ok that's good to know. I'll stick with the e-shops until I get the new tank and sump. Would you recommend anything else in that size range? I really want good performance as it's going to be pretty heavily stocked

hey mojo i have a 100 lps display and 30 gallon refuge with a decent amount of cheato. i was looking at the tunze doc 9006 and 9011. what are you opinions on the tunze docs? and which tunze would be best for my system?

I'm not mojo, but I have run a Tunze 9010 on a 105g sps display with a 29g sump. It worked fine, but I ended up changing to a Skimz sk181 to get a bit more skimming power. The 9011 is supposed to be a bit more powerful. I think it would be great on your lps tank.

Hey Mojo,

I'm looking to run my tank without a filter.

I have a 36g bowfront. It has a 2" sandbed & an AquaMaxx HOB-1.

The tank is stocked with a pair of ocellaris clowns, tailspot blenny, hi fin shrimp goby, pacific pygmy angel, geometric hawkfish approx. 10 hermit crabs, snails & a light mix of softies & lps.

I currently have a Fluval 205, but I think that I might not really need it.

Hey Mojo, hey all. I need your help. I currently own a 46g 22" cube with an I-tech 100 skimmer (which was recommended here and works works great) but my sump has sprung a bit of a leak and due to the clumsiness I have because of lack of space and the fact that I will be changing over to a fowlr with maybe a few softies I have decided to change my filtration around a bit. I am currently looking at a Aqueon proflex model 1 sump and was wondering what skimmer anyone would recommend or if you would recommend just going without a skimmer entirely.

The sump is not large at all with a skimmer area of 4 3/4" x 9 7/8" that can also be used as a fuge if I could get a descent hob skimmer or I could do without the fuge but the skimmer would have to be small enough to fit inside the 4 3/4" width.

Please let me know what quality/ descent skimmers I should look at. I have heard some say Tunze and others say Marine Pro 100.

Please let me know what you guys think.

The 9011 would be better for your tank the 9006. But are you looking at them for there small footprint ? if you have more space I think some of the other skimmers out now would be a better option like a atb 840, the jns sk2, sro 2000 int. ect..

the tunze is about the best small foot print in that range. I have a wm mf 121 and it is great but just a tad large for your setup.
