Skimmer Q&A Thread

fuzzy my personal favorite skimmer for big tanks is the reeflo orca's, you could also go with the octopus xp8000 but dont think it holds a candle to the orca's guy who's tank i take care of 1100g heavy stocked fowler i use the pro model on pulls a ton of crap literally

Planning out an upgrade. 150 dt, 75 fuge, 60 or 55 sump . Planning on mixed reef some spa and medium bioload. I was curious if an old school h&s 200x2-1260 would suffice, an sro 3000ext or atb 840. Wasn't sure if the atb would fit in the sump. The h&s and sro could be run external but wasn't sure how they compare.

I currently have a h&s 150-2001, on a 75 + 40 sump/fuge. Its been running great but I'm assuming it won't be able to handle the upgraded system.

Mojo, your input would be appreciated.

Anyone have any input on this?

im struggleing here... please help me understand something. in simple terms, the amount of water passed through the sump. if it is more then the intake of the skimmer, then the skimmer will not function to its potential. correct? example: 600 gph return on return pump with a 300gph skimmer, would mean only half of what pass through the sump would get skimmed. ok, so then how do you get the entire amount of water passing through the sump to be skimmed? my only solution would be a external skimmer, that is fed with a downdraft. i have a open sump with no baffles, is it better to have baffles, or a skimmer with a larger intake rating then my return gph? one more question? with the rite kind of thought process, and planning (careful planning) can any skimmer be turned into a recirculating configuration, where an external feed can be installed? thanks.

additional info. my tank is a 150 tall with a 25 gallon sump. i keep sps and i love fish! lol ive been battling nitrates as well as phosphates. lets say money is not a concern and see what info i get. what ive been looking at the most is the skimz 162 external and anything with a bb 3000 on it. thanks.

You want your flow to more through your sump than the skimmer. It all gets skimmed just not every pass. of you have a 100 g system and your skimmer pulls 300gph then your tank gets skimmed 3x and hour. This is true as long as your return pump flows more than your skimmer. About 5x your tank volume is a good sump flow. and skimmer can be turned in to recirc yes with a little work. not all pumps however are meant to be ran out of water. recirc isnt majic. they are all good. the sro 3000 would do wellthe skims sk3 would do well too.

If you like the Skimz Line look into the Warner Marine MF 251 the skimmer its self is made by Skmiz but has a better pump has an Eden/Ehiem and a better bubble plate. Warner Marine had Skimz make them, the only difference in the skimmer is WM is Blue. Yes you want your sump flow and skimmer flow about the same

The eden pumps do work well but have had some isssues . I am not sold on them yet. The skimz and wm both use the same exact eden pump. The wm is blue and has the vbt bubble plate.

Mojo... I'm upgrading to a 240 gallon tank and would like a recommendation on an internal sump skimmer. I'm having my sump custom built so I can fit whatever I need. For a 240 gallon would a Super Reef XP3000 Internal (SRO-XP3000I) be good or should I go for the Super Reef XP5000 Internal (SRO-XP5000I)? Other than the Super Reef Octopus line of skimmers is there a better internal skimmer I should be looking at? Thanks for your help!

the H&S200x2 would be the best fit. it cycle more water and is well balanced.. The sro would be ok too but with the higher water volume I dont think the ATB 840 would move enough water . It would work well. but I would want a little more water turnover.

the 150 would do ok until you start to get a bigger load in the 150. I would get it set up and going before dropping the extra money on the skimmer.

What issues have you seen or heard about?

The eden 2000 pump had restart problems. The new magnet helped that a lot.
the 2800 pump was noisey. It has been improved over the first release. but not as quiet as some of the other pumps it competes with. The 5000 pump is pretty good but have seen some melt down after a year of use and need rebuilt. have only seen one. mine and heard of one more 5000 doing so.

They produce great #'s i think its just a matter of time before they get them dailed in.

The bk would be better, But for the money, I would look at the JNS sk3, THe sro 3000 or the bk SM200.
the vertex 250 is huge and too large really for the 180. the neck is6 inches .If you really like the vertex alpha I would advise you to get the 200.

the sro 3000 would do just fine. If you are going to really heavily stock it with fish then you may push the 5000 lower limit IMO to run consitant. THe JNS sk5, the sro 3000, the oct xs 250, the atb 1050A, and even on the lower end of things the vertex ins 280 would work well too.
