Skimmer Q&A Thread

The am500? I thought they had two sedra 9000's on them with a 12" body. Those skimmers pull tons of crud but the pumps run hot and draw more electricity than stated. Also the ones that came with sicce pumps had the sicce 2500 or multiple 2500's which is regarded as sicce worst pump. They pulled a lot of air but we're problematic. If you like aquamaxx go with a cone 5 if you want a 10" body skimmer. The cone 5 is am awesome skimmer and silent too. Also the em500 is available with the better pumps. Jmo

The only thing is the 6-8 week back order on them

just talked to a guy from "Aquarium Specialty" and he was telling me that the Aquamaxx are lower end skimmers. i was telling him that i was between the em200 and the rlss r6, he said the r6 hands down. i wonder why he would be so down on the aquamaxx. well at least why he would consider them as low end.....

That's almost laughable. I do like rlss but my sk3 and am200 has the same acrylic thickness as my buddies r8. Aquamaxx uses Italian pumps and rlss uses Chinese pumps. I've read a few stories already about the Chinese dc pumps dying. Find a single thread about the sicce shark pumps going out.

yeah thats what im worried about with the r6,the pump. at least with the em200 i have several places i can go to get a pump if need be. i have a syncra 3.0 as my return pump and it has been working great.

Hi mojo
I want to setup a new tank I wnat to buy a skimmer for it the dimenssion is 200*60*65
the sump is about150*50*50 which skimmer is good for me? i want to buy a best skimmer with cheapest price,in iran icant find a good skimmer, and icant order it,I want to say my friend and if he come to iran buy it for me and bring it to iran for me
for the next year i want to go fowler after that go with some reef

The vertex Omega 150, does it have the same pump as the Aquamaxx series? It says modified on the discription

Based upon the pictures it looks exactly like a Sicce Syncra, I'm just not sure if it's a Syncra 1.5 or 2.0. But with the 19w power draw and 880lph air draw numbers I'm going to guess it is the Syncra 2.0.

whats the better sicce pump for skimming the shark 2.0 or the psk1000 ??? the em200 uses the shark 2 (syncra 2.0 i believe) vs some other skimmers in the same price range that use the psk1000.

thanks.

The PSK 1000 is a slightly larger pump. It moves a little more air (800lph to 720lph), and probably a lot more water, but I can't find the specs on the shark pumps water flow. The PSK 1000 will move around 1400lph, I suspect the Shark will move about half of that. That means less power draw (22w vs 60w) and more contact time.

Depends on the skimmer body and what size system it would go on. The 2.0 with the stock volute is rated at 569gph and the psk1000 is 880gph stock and they are totally different. When you throw on a NW and custom volute the air numbers they would produce would be on opposite ends of the spectrum. The 2.0 and the sk400 would be a better comparison IMO. Manufacturers choose the pump based on skimmer body size (height, neck, diameter) and design an impeller/volute and venturi to get the best air to water ratio for the skimmer to perform well on a given size system.

The 500 I am talking about is on fragtastic it has a sicce 5.0

so i just placed an order for the EM200. it may not perform as good as the r6 and have the same bells and whistles but all in all, i feel better long term about the sicce pump over the rlss pump. maybe a few years down the road the rlss pump will be ok but ive read to many complaints about them right now.

Now i just hope the em200 fits ok in my sump. i hope i made a wise choice.

The aquamaxx will perform just as good as the rlss if not better. You picked a good one.

thanks, really i just hope its a noticeable upgrade over my euro reef 100. being as its been the only skimmer ive ever had, its all i have to compare it too. but after going thru 2 pumps and it having trouble starting up after water changes, im done with that skimmer.

or done with that pump i should say, the body is still nice and seems to be well made. you know i wonder if i would have been better off just modding a new pump on the euro reef body.

oh well its already ordered.

I spoke with the guy at fragtastic he warned me against aquamaxx. Sighting they are cheaply made. I have the Omega 150 and he said I would have to be ok with much lower quality materials.
