Skimmer Q&A Thread

The best way to size a skimmer is to state your size of the DT and then ask people what they use on that size tank and start to research there. Try to set a realistic budget, look for a used one if you can.

ok.. I'll ask.. I will probably have 80 gallons in the DT and 30 or so in the sump. My buget would $~350ish ~450ish. Medium stocked tank.

hey mojo i have a aquamaxx cone 6 skimmer do you know of any issues with it as i just cannot find that sweet spot like i did with my Warner marine skimmer i am carbon dosing right now and its just never stable sometimes it pulls a lot of foam and then two days later i have to adjust it because its no longer pulling foam my tank is a 200 gal heavily stocked with a heavy bio load because my nitrates wont go down which they should wit such a large skimmer i think the pumps are to blame is there maybe a mod i could use or use diffrent pumps plz help as im at a loss thanks

That's a huge skimmer for a 200 gallon tank no matter how heavy the bio load is. A cone 5 with only 1 shark 5 pump on it would still be pretty big for that tank. My buddy had a cone 6 on a 400 gallon and it worked great. That skimmer isn't going to keep a stable foam head on a 200. Downsize to a cone 5...

so shouldn't it bring down my nitrates with the carbon dosing?

yes! So long as you have efficient skimming.

when you add carbon you are cultivating additional biomass with increased bacterial populations that absorb nitrate and phosphate. If you dont have good skimming then much of the NO3 and PO4 stays in the system.

hello,

looking for advice on a skimmer for my new build...

50g split dt, 29g sump

heavily stocked with a frogfish on one half / pair of clowns and nems on the other half

worried about the frogfish load on tank.

would like to try an max out around $300, if possible.

so... many choices....

possibly... ro nw150, ro nwb 150, ro dnwb-150, ro sro 1000lss, wm as150, vertex omega 130

thoughts or recommendations on these or any others?

+1 to what reeftivo said. The problem is that your not getting "good skimming" with that much of an oversized skimmer. Trust me when I tell you that your tank would benefit from a downgrade on your skimmer. A smaller skimmer will be able to keep a stable foam head thus making it way more efficient. Your cone 6 is a beast of a unit more suited to skim a 300 heavy stocked tank.

Hi all,
I have a ASM g-2 with a new pump I got for $125 but I have only a 40 b with a 20l sump I'm using it in. Is that too much skimmer? I currently only have FOWLR but as the system matures plan on adding coral. I'm on a budget and that was the best deal I found for that price that seems like it would be able to handle an upgrade later if I do.(seems like that's usually what happens in this hobby. lol)

that's what im saying if it over sized it should skim like a boss and i should have zero nitrates but that's not the case.

Whats everyones recommendation on skimmer for a 350g / 75 gallon sump? Medium to heavy bioload.

I'd like a skimmer with pump inside for room, height doesn't matter. I've looked at:

SRO 5000SSS - 2400 l/h
SRO 6000SSS - 2400 l/h

Aquamaxx EM500 - just don't know much about these pumps like l/h
Aquamaxx EM600

SkimZ SM253 - 2400 l/h

I'm stuck and looking for individuals running any of these skimmers on 350-400 gallon tanks. Thanks for the help!

What is the net system volume?

Net volume is 350gallons. Viewable from both sides so corals will be on both sides of rock and many of them. Mainly LPS but some SPS. Additionally I will have 15-20 fish with 5-6 tangs. It's a very long tank at 11 feet.

I want to do this right the first time with the skimmer. Thanks again!

Not a fan of space saver configurations, but any of the skimmers you are considering will be adequate for your system.

Jformani - I'm setting up a tank of similar size and went with the JNS Shark Series 7 based on Drae's recommendation. I have it but don't have the tank set up yet.

A friend is looking for a skimmer for a 40 gallon tank medium bio-load.
The spot in her sump is small, only 7" x 11" x18" with a small budget.

She is looking at a SCA 301 and I'm afraid that a little small.
Anyone have some suggestions?
