Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hi corey,'An MTC dual mazzei venturi will be your best choice as it has more contact time than pinwheels and will allow you to adjust the air/water parameters separetely .

Hey Bernie, I run a custom GEO beckett skimmer now. I am struggling to get it dialed in again as the gate valve was moved. It's just a PIA and I'm frustrated with it. How is the skimmer you recommend any different.

Corey

I will look into them but I would have to change my sump. Does ATB make a recirculating skimmer?

Yes, the external version adds about $300 to the price. Here is a picture of the next size up:

I have a 125 and I have ordered a 240. It's a Fish only and deciding on skimme
I want to buy the royal exclusive bubble king double cone 200 plus rd3 speedy
Is this a waste of money or is there another skimmer that would be better for me since it's only a fish only tank

That's a loaded question and will vary base on who you talk too. But that is one hell of a skimmer.

im about 90 percent that this is what I'm going to get. I was just looking to see
What kind of reviews are out there on this model and the reliability
I can expect from them

Starting to look into equipment for my 65 gallon build. It will be a reef tank, hob overflow and looking at a Eshopps sump. The Eshopps skimmers seem well reviewed for the price. My question is, I'd like the psk-100 which is rated 75-100 gallon, but it's 22" high and inside clearance in my tank is 25". Would I be too cramped with only 3" above the skimmer? Never run one before. Thanks!

Completely different animal ! First off, the venturi system is a true counter-current design which uses an independent pump for the mazzei injectors and by using an separate pump to feed the water into the column ,you can precisely control the the output you desire. The beckett system you have relies solely on the adjustment of the gate valve to control the water/air levels in the column.

Yeah it's a struggle right now!!! I've looked around at the ATB models and I'll check out what one your speaking of

Anyone happen to have specs on the old GX4100 needle wheel pump for skimmers. I am looking for a replacement and not haveing any luck.

Hey everyone my SCA 302 is basically worthless at this point so I need a replacement. I'm looking for something more economical since I am upgrading in 7 months when I move. So I just need something to get me by until then. My setup is a 25 gallon display, 12 gallon frag tank, and 15 gallon sump. The system is a heavily stocked sps setup. I have been looking at the following:

RO Classic 152-S
SSA ES5
Simplicity 120

I am strongly leaning towards the RO Classic 152-S and Simplicity 120, but both are very new to the market. I really like the idea of a dc skimmer and would be interested in trying it.

I was also at my lfs today and they had a good deal on an Eshopps S120. How is this skimmer? It seems to follow the popular cone build and uses a sicce pump so it would appear to be a solid skimmer.

Since your system is small and it looks like your looking at cheap I am going to say the Aquamaxx cones CO-1 .. It is a skimmer that feels cheap but skims like crazy on smaller systems.. It has a very reliable pump.

If I had to pick your 3 I might take the RO. I do not know much about that RO model but it looks pretty nice. They are usually not too bad of skimmers and are reliable.

I would bet both out do your SCA skimmer.

They should all be better than the SCA at this point! The aquamaxx would be my number 1 at the moment but it won't work because of the neck design into the cup won't accommodate my swabbie. I'm thinking of going with either the RO or the Eshopps. I can get the eshopps locally from an LFS I like to support. It's a pretty conventional design and utilizes the sicce so should perform well. The RO model is new, but the RO brand has built a solid reputation and the aquatrance pumps seem to work well

The RO Classic is good but I would agree the aquamaxx would have a better pump and so would that SSA ES5. Both have sicce pumps. I would look at both of those as a good option. The newer Eshopps if I understand it also come with a sicce pump and not a bad option. Sounds like space is limited so make sure to check out the recommended water level for each one and that you can meet those needs.

nvm

I'm happy to have found this thread. I'm completely new to reef tanks, so I'm learning all I can though slowly.

Anyhow, I'm setting up a 40b mixed reef display and will have about 10" × 11" of room in the skimmer section of my sump. What would you folks recommend? I've looked at the Reef Octopus Classic 110INT, but don't know what else might work.

Thanks,
Brian

I'm about half a year or so into my 40b setup and am quite happy with my RO 110 Classic. Check out my build thread and give me a link to your so I can follow along!!

The RO classics are still around for a reason. They perform well. Other options would also be what was previously mentioned above for the 25g heavily stocked SPS tank.
