Skimmer Q&A Thread

I'm about half a year or so into my 40b setup and am quite happy with my RO 110 Classic. Check out my build thread and give me a link to your so I can follow along!!
I'm actually already subscribed to your build.

I don't have a build thread as of yet. A few questions posted here and there, but I'm still in research and gather mode at the moment. I'll be sure to share when I've got a bit more going.

Oh cool! Well when you start yours drop a note on my thread so I can follow. Hopefully some of my trial and experience has been a help [emoji3]

Looking for a skimmer for a 150 heavily stocked. Feeding about 3 cubes a day and will have a methanol denitrator (think carbon dosing). I like the ATB 840, but in case that isn't in the budget I'm wondering about an sro2000 or 3000, or something similar like omega 180, maybe something better? Not sure which one would be suitable. The 2000 seems a little small, but the 3000 seems a little big. Not much in this thread for this tank size in the last year, and I'm not up on the newer brands. Thanks in advance.

Aquamaxx EM300 so far to me is a better skimmer then the SRO 3000. Comparable air draw but less water flow and more stability. If looking at the reef Octopus line I would look at the diablo skimmers or classic. At 150g I would look for an 8" body.

Thanks. Wasn't necessarily looking at ro, that's just what I know for middle of the road skimmers. Wasn't sure if some of the newer brands in the same price point like aquamax or vertex did a better job.

So em300 or Diablo. I see some or all of the diablos have been discontinued?

A quick Google search turned up no one selling aquamax em series or jns.

I'm currently running a Reef Octopus XP1000 SSS on my 93 Gallon cube. Great skimmer when it's working but SO inconsistent, random overflows etc. So tired of messing with this skimmer, I cringe when I see people still recommending RO skimmers...

Looking to replace this with a more reliable Skimmer in the $500price range. Tank will be SPS dominant. After all the overflow issues with my current skimmer I'm looking for a set it and forget it skimmer that consistently removes crud from the water.

I've been eying the NYOS 160 or the Vertex 180i. Any suggestions ?

It's not really all the RO skimmers. I really believe a lot of it is just the SRO line. Those bubble blasters are awesome pumps but really needed a better body to go with them. Neck needs to be longer or body wider or outlet in a better position or something. There's a reason they came out with those neck extensions. Which have you thought of getting one of those ?

I haven't heard much about the nyos other then a lot of people looking at them. I've seen one or two good reviews but that's good or bad. The vertex 180 and under get many good reviews and a reason reef octopus copied them.

Vertex 200I maybe, I have not heard a lot about it, The 180I people really seem to like and this is just a larger model. The 180I might be just a tad small for a heavy load.

ATB 1050A a little more expensive but worth it.

RLSS R10 the r8 might be just a tad small for a heavy load.

One of the aquamaxx skimmers would work too. They have a decent pump and good design especially the coneS series but they just feel really cheap. They do a great job though.

As far as RO skimmers go some of the models are just trying to push too much air for the neck size. A air valve to cut back some of the air can really help some of them. That is what causes most of the issues.
A way of controlling the air should be standard on all skimmers Now adays. Nyos skimmer shave a away of controlling air I believe.

I have not seen or heard much on the Nyos skimmers but it would be a good fit.

Vertex 180I would work but a few have said they have had issues with overflows too not as much as the 130 though. 130 is notorious for overflows.

Might want to take a look at these too:

RLSS R6I if space is a issue.
Or
ATB 840 v2.0 Protein Skimmer. He needs to update this skimmer on the site. It now has a DC pump. It is what I just started running on my 90.

After 24 hrs first day of running it:

Less than 24 hours 1 week latter.
Produces a little watery skimmate but I like it that way.

reef octopus nwb 250 help

reef octopus nwb 250 help

Hello everyone! I think I made a mistake of buying*reef*octopus*nwb 250 which is powered by dual otp 3000 pumps(65 Watt each ), now one of the pumps impeller just broke down, currently I am running my old backup skimmer from red sea, however when I tried contacting my LFS, he said that these pumps are no longer available in the market hence he can't arrange for the impeller, I live in India and these products come without any warranty and I just want to replace the pumps for a better performance.

my question is, if I can replace the OTP pumps with any of the upgraded models like Bubble blaster or Aquatrance, if yes? Which model will easily replace otp 3000 without having to do any alterations in existing plumbing in the skimmer? Again, my skimmer is powered by dual otp 3000 pumps.*

Two places I would contact for that model skimmer. Jeremy at premium aquatics might know or contact Coralvue through their support ticket system. Even though it's not under warranty they could still help answer if there's a replacement/upgrade pump for that model. And if so what adapters you might need. And if you should change out both pumps.

I'm not sure what's available in India but you could see if JNS is available over there. They make great skimmers at usually an affordable price.

Out of those two if you're going to stock and feed decently I'd go with the 160.

Agreed especially with a space saver skimmer go up ..

Looking at the 120 and the amount of air it pulls I would use it no higher than 75 - 90 depending on stocking levels. They dont say the amount of water it processes.

If you get one report back on how they work? not many reviews on them yet..

Thanks , I'll report back when I get it. What little info I have found is positive on the NYOS. I'm needing something with a small footprint and this fits the bill.
