Skimmer Q&A Thread

has anyone had or have a proclear aquatics skimmer? I have had a proclear aquatics mps 250 for years... at least 5 or 6 years. it was oversized for my last tank so I kept it and put it on my new 140 I setup about 6 months ago. Seems like in the last few months it just stop producing the same. I have started trying to play with the air and stuff but cant figure it out. Wondering if its time to move on and upgrade?

Looking for an in sump skimmer that will fit in an 11x13 in space. That will handle 200 gallons of heavily stocked tank. What do you recommend?

What's your budget? ATB, Bubble king? Life Reef, RLSS? They each have good options for your space and size tank. I'm extremely happy with my AquaMaxx EM300 on my 180 fairly heavily stocked and very heavily fed system. As posted on the previous page I'm going to be trying out a MTC MVX.

ATB Elegance 200 Pro is a good fit:
"¢ Rated for tanks up to 340 gallons
"¢ Footprint: 11″ x 9″
"¢ Total Height: 21.6″

You are going to need a space saver for that amount of space.
I would look at the better skimmers since with space savers you loose some efficiency because of contact time and that is a decent size tank.

I would look at Bubble king, ATB, RLSS or Deltec like what was mentioned..

Agreed with Paul the ATB Elegance 200 PRO would be a good fit.

When it comes to performance between these 2 Reef Octopus skimmers, which one is the better design?
Thanks....

Looking for recommendations for a skimmer for my 150 g mixed reef. not many fish at the moment, but pretty full with coral (are they considered bio-load?) I plan to add more fish in the future.

Budget is around 500-600. Most important features to me are performance, and dependability.

Some I have considered so far-

MTC MVX 30"- I know the pump to run it would put me over budget, but I think I could swing it
Aquamaxx Cones - co- 2 or 3 I am not sure
ATB 840 V2 -I understand they come with DC pumps now, which makes me VERY unsure about this one, has anyone had a failed pump from them yet?
Any other- I am open to anything

Thanks

You can talk to Paul and get the original sicce pump on the ATB 840 V2 which performs really well too... Would be a perfect fit too..

I do not know much about the MTC skimmer. I used Mazzei injectors though like 20 years ago and they require a decent pump.. I think newer needle wheel skimmers are more efficient but the extra height of those skimmers can increase contact time by allot.

Need a skimmer reccomendation. Decided to get back in after several years on the side line. The last skimmer I bought was a euro reef and I don't even think they are around anymore.

Sump is a trigger emerald 34 and the skimmer section is 10x14
Tank 80 rimless that will be heavily stocked. I like corals but the kids like fish so the wife says I can spend the $$ if we put fish in it.

Money is not limitless but flexible as I want a very solid skimmer I will not want to replace in a year.

Thanks for the help.

Both of those would be a great fit. I would go the non-jebao route on the ATB. I'm not totally anti jebao but it really rubs me the wrong way that a skimmer thats supposed to be and I believe to be all about quality and sets itself apart with R&D building a very well balanced skimmer goes with a pump all about cheap, unreliable, and knock off branding and poor reputation.

For the 30" mtc you can go with any pump that has specs at least as good as a mag 18 or better. And by specs you have to look at the head height and flow curve. Most pumps will provide that. I'll be trying out a mag18, waveline dc12000, and a jebao dct 15000 on my mvx 36"

Too be fair it is not a standard Jebao and is modified to be better. I wish I knew what they changed though.
But I agree I wish they would have used a better brand.
I wish they offered the alternatives on their site too instead of having to email them.
I have been running it for a while and it is a perfect match for the skimmer.
I have had no issues with the DC pump at all.
I have not run across a skimmer yet that skims as well but it is almost time to try another skimmer.

Shred, are you currently running the dc powered atb ? If so, for how long?

I posted above I am.
I think I have had it since OCT of last year so not really long enough to know how relaible. It performs insane with the custom volute and pinwheel.. 1200 lps of air according to them and I bet it comes close.

DC pumps have come along way. I still have a little distrust for them though myself but I have distrust with anything Chinese made. But then all my pumps are now DC in my tank. My return, gyre etc. I have had good luck except my very first two which where gen 1 RLSS. I am coming to close to max on my circuit for the tank so I need to save as much power as I can.

Honestly AC pumps are becoming more unreliable too... Ehiem has moved some of their pump production to China and now it seems they have issues with those models. Look at the garbage maxijets have become. Atmann more Garbage. Other than a few expensive German pumps most are becoming garbage and very expensive.. The Ecotech DC could be a decent pump but again not out long enough.

I have one ac pump on my frag which is a tunze. Best pump ever.

anyone use the new ATB elegance pro 200 with the DC pump? how is it? Just not sure about the Jebao pump.

I do not believe there are any in operation in the USA yet, but there are lots of 1050's with the same DCT pump running with no issues. The ONLY DCT pump issue I have had is one bad power supply out of the box.
