Skimmer Q&A Thread

150 Gallon

150 Gallon

Hey Mojo,

Which skimmer would you use between a WM K2 and a WM AS200? Is it just price and footprint, or does one perform better than the other?

Thanks

Thanks Mojo~, that is the kind of information that I need since I am totally new to this. I read your enitire thread and it appears that the Vertex in 100 or 180 may be a good one for me. Another possibility is a MSX200. I am just now building this set up that will be about 90 gallons for the tank and another 30 gallons for the sump. This is based on internal measurements and maximum level but does not include the displacement for LR and sand. Once I have a couple in mind I can wait for good used one to come up.

Depends on size of system really. The as200 is going to move about twice the water or more than the k2. So if you are running over 150g tank I would go with the as 200. I would say a perfect match for the k2 is a well stocked 125. The AS200 will handle more water volume with the sedra 9000HO. air draw is the same but it will just process more water. It wont be quiet as efficient as the k2 but it has a beast of a pump.

if it is going to be stocked heavily then I would go with a 8 inch body skimmer for sure. if it just some softies and and a couple fish the in 100 would be fine. I would probably get the vertex in 180 then the msx 200. Both are great skimmers. and will do wonderful job on your tank.

Look at customer service as well. This is becoming more and more important to me. The vertex, I would buy from either Premium Aquatics ore Aquarium specialty. Just because those are the ones I deal with. Aquacave and marine depot are both good as well.
Aas far as the MSX. All the guys at Marine Solutions are really helpful as well. I have talked to them man times even late at night. Great service.

So either way you go I am sure you will be pleased.

How about the MSX 160, I like the fact that it has a smaller foot print but it may be too small. At this point I don't know what my stocking will be, but I think 4 or 5 small fish, softies and some lps. It doubt if it will be overstocked. Just enough to make it look interesting.

This would be for a 150 gallon plus 40 gallon sump. Do you include sump volume in your application?

no, not usually unless you are running a crazy sump lol. Like a 100g sump on a 90g tank.

On a 150g its a toss up really. I would probably go with the AS 200.

I am sure you have covered this but I am trying to get some quick input while sitting at work and can't read all the pages. I am looking to upgrade my skimmer on a 180 display mixed reef with pretty heavy load. What would you recommend keeping price in mind. Thanks.

I would suggest the ATB 1050
Hurricone cat 1
MSX 250A
MAybe one of the new super reef octopus with the bubble blaster and the pump inside.

Which Super Reef Octopus were you thinking? I like the Octopus and MSX skimmers and want some flexibility to upgrade the tank and not have to purchase another skimmer.

Im looking to get some input since I did not really run a skimmer that much on my last tank because it did not work the best (CSS 65) but I want to get a pretty solid one for my new build and for my girlfriends new tank and was wondering if you could recommend a few to check out for me. I will be setting up a 50 gallon with a 10 gallon sump and would like to get a skimmer with small enough footprint to run in the sump if I could. My girlfriends tank is a 40 gallon hexagon that will not have a sump so her skimmer will need to be HOB. Any ideas? thanks

Ray

in sump I would go with the vertex in 100 or the msx/octo X 160 . For a HOB look at the warner marine h1 or h2 or the octo line/ msx line at marine solutions.
