Skimmer Q&A Thread

prodman, any skimmer with a bubble blaster pump seems to be " A Big Bang for you buck". I put one on my OCTO X 200 and it is light years better than any skimmer I have used with a sicce pump.

Do any come with one out of the box? I have been out of the loop for almost a year and its amazing how many new things are available in that time.

you can go with a ATB 840, the octoxp2000 the vertex in 180 will all be great skimmers for your tank and a wide variety of prices

So i recently read a report that Saltwater Connection will be coming out with a new cone skimmer with an undermount pump, which would be ideal as my sump is very small. However, the retail price is substantially lower than anything i have seen for cone skimmers. the 150 gallon unit will run for $250 and uses an Atman 2500 hybrid pinwheel. Have you heard anything regarding these pumps or these skimmers? A silent pump is high on my list of requirements.

ill have a skimmer with this pump this week to play with and can give you a hands on opinion then. Should have it thursday afternoon.

the only cone with a bubble blaster is the octo cone that I am aware of. now there are other octo skimmers that use the bubbleblaster pump.
That pump is pretty even bigger than an askol in terms of physical size. So just make sure you have enough room.

Skimmer question

Skimmer question

If you have posted the answers to these already I apologize for asking again but I got to page 20something and hadn't seen all of these so I figured I'd ask.

How do these skimmers rate (ie. good, better, best skimmer/pump):

C-Skim1200
ASM G2 or G3
PM RL 175 or 200
Super Reef Octo XP-2000
Vertex In 180 or 250

They are all $300-400 so cost really isn't an issue. My sump allows for 26"H x 14" x 10" max. I have a 150g reef tank, only a couple of small pieces of sps and lps, lots of mushrooms and fish.

Have narrowed down the search to these 5, would like some help/advice to narrow it down to 2 choices (IF POSSIBLE ) and go from there. Thanks for your help!!

out of those the Vertex in 180 is probably the best bang for the buck. The newer octo cone is nice too but its about $100 more. Its nice but again the vertex is really solid. The 180 is really ncely balanced.

I have an Octopus 800S and after 2 weeks it's still throwing big bubbles into my tank. I haven't done any mods to it. How can i cut down on these?

Hi

Can someone tell me how to mod an Eheim 1260 to work as a skimmer pump...like, what type of pinwheel impeller would fit in it? Is there anything else required to make that work besides putting a different impeller in it? I've never modded a pump before so sorry if it's a dumb question.

My goal is to upgrade the performance of an Euroreef C8-2 skimmer (8" diameter x 24" height). It comes with a Sedra 500 pump as it is, and I have an extra Eheim 1260 I'm not using.....

Howdy, I had already started a thread about asking whether I needed a protein skimmer or not. Well I decided to get one, and now I just wanted your opinion on which one to get. I have a 65 gallon tank with a sump that I should be replacing with a refugium later. So I would like a really good one, I do not know if they make any under 300$ if possible. Or I guess the best one < that price. Thanks for advice in advance.

Under that price I would suggest the vertex in 100. Should be around $199 and is a great bangfor the buck skimmer. I think you will really like it.

I am thinking of upgrading to the new xp5000 octopus external cone skimmer for my 180. Does anyone know the total footprint including pipes , pump etc.?

There is a guy who is selling a Deltic pinwheel for that pump but you will have to ask about the volute also. I have that ER skimmer is it the old style many turns to remove the cup? I also have the sedra 5000 pump and the eheim pump. The eheim hole is different that the Sedra, the hole is taller and 1'' instead of 3/4''. The ehiem puts out a lot of water so you will need a small air line valve to restrict the air.
