Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hey Mojo,
What skimmer do you recommend for an oceanic 58g rimless(same as yours), and a 40g sump/fuge?

Also, do you think one MP20 would be good enough flow for a non sps tank?

The mp 20 wwould be great.skimmer wise I would get one of the following
Vertex in 100
Bubble magnus NA7
Warner marine s 150
or the GSA six would be nice as well. it has the pump on the inside. nice little skimmer made in the USA

yea I like my mp10's I think they are about right having 2. If I went with one I think a mp20 would be fine.

Can anyone recommend a good external recirc skimmer for a 200g volume with a heavy bioload??? I am looking at the MRC 2R because of the upgrading aspect. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Deltecs are always a good choice. but also the Warner marine RX 200 would be good and the superreef octo 5000 would be a good choice.

The ATB externals are super nice but are a little pricey. great product though.

so are you recommending them over the 2R or do you not have experience with the 2R. Thanks for the input mojo-- been following your posts lately.

well the mrc 2r is a heck of a skimmer. But I think its a bit much for what you are doing. With dual becketts the pump you will need to run to put some serious pressure behind them will be pretty big. Like a pw150 or a bl 40.

It will skim your tank well I am sure. But it is louder then a pinwheel skimmer and will be power hungry. if you have it already or can get a really good deal thats one thing but otherwise I would look into something more effiecient.

Alrighty then. I'm a bit suprised to hear that, but sounds good. I'm just used to seeing people have skimmers that are WAYY oversized for their tanks, and with vodka I thought I might still need more.

BTW, nitrates are finally zero with vodka and BB! W00t!

Although I agree that others tend to super-size, technically speaking, your skimmer is oversized at 420lph of air, rated conservatively for a 80g. The RS80 could probably skim up to a 120g (without carbon dosing) if you do not heavily stock.

BTW: I have a RS80 in the closet that I used for 9 months. I am now using an i-Tech 100 (400lph of air), which is rated somewhat conservatively at 100g. The i-Tech has an edge because of the controlled turbulence, but I think either one would handle vodka dosing on your 58g or my 56g.

I think one of the new skimmers with the Bubble Blaster pump would be killer for you. I would compare the pumps to the Askoll pumps, but way less expensive. I would search for on with the BB5000 for a 200 gallon. I have a 2 year old OCTO Extreme 200 body with the BB3000 pump and it is way better than the stock Octo Ex 200. Hope this helps.

I can't believe the advances in skimmers in the last 2-3 years.

Mike a www.reefspecialty.com steered me to the Super Reef Octo 5000 with BB5000 pump.

This thing is amazing! Quiet, skims like mad, and very steady on adjustment AFTER the break in period.

I had heard from a good friend that the Red Dragon / Askoll pumps can throw a lot of heat. The BB5000 is quiet and does not seem to add much heat to my system.

100% satisfied with this skimmer.

Mojo also thought they looked good a bit back which added confidence in the decision.

Thanks,

Todd

Do anyone have any recommendations for a in sump skimmer for a 200g heavy bioload??? have about 27 inches of clearance, and the foot print is not that big of a deal. I have recommendations for external models (thanks mojo) and am now exploring my options. I am looking for a great skimmer. Any recommendations would be great. I am researching the octopus skimmers-- good reviews, but there are alot of them. Thanks.

Yes I would say the ATB 1050A would be at the top of the list. Some other great options would be the the MSX 1a, the MSX 250A, THe warner MArine AS 200, The Hurricone cat 1, the New super reef octo's and the new deltec skimmers would work very well for you.

Hey MOjo!

What are my options for a 125G with 30G sump that will be heavily stocked?!

Here are a few things to narrow it down............My sump is 12" wide, i don't care for Sicce pumps.............

Looking at the SRO-5000SSSINT or the XP-2000sss not sure which would be better

is there a better skimmer in that price range? i know i want a skimmer with a bubble blaster or an askol and that one will fit in my sump........
