Hi Mojo... Lookinf for help in finding my best option in a skimmer for about $350. I'm building a 135 g tank with a 40 g sump. I want it to have a small foot print. I was looking at the Tunze's (I think 9006, 9011) but nobody seems to mention them here. I'm starting with a light bio-load and building up to a moderate one.

What would you recommend??

Let me know what your foot print options are. But right off the top of my head the Swc 160 cone would work well.

The tunze are nice but they are a little dated. Nice skimmers for those really tight spaces. but there are more and more options now a days

Mojo...

Thanks for your suggestion. If that is my best option for the $ then that's what I'll get.

I haven't partitioned the sump yet, I just want to optimize its space without having big equipment in it or anywhere else in the cabinet. I'm thinking about 10x12x24...

I have another question.... Skimmer in the "drain intake" side of the sump or on the "output" side oof the sump

in the price range I think the swc 160 will probably be the best bang for your buck. Small footprint in mind,
Skimmer should go where your drain comes into your sump. IF running a fuge it should go before the fuge as well. unless you are running a fige on one side with your return pump in the middle of course.

Let me know what you get and post some pictures here. I like pictures. lol. Even Crayon drawings are good. I understand them best....

Hi,

I just got a 60g cube with a 23"x10.5"x16" sump. I need to get a skimmer for it and was looking at the NAC6 and NAC7. Is the NAC7 sized too big for a 60g? I don't know what the bioload will be like yet, but i'm guessing medium to high.

Can't wait to get my first tank up and running.

Thanks!

hi mojo what external protein skimmer do you recomend and what fairly cheap in sump skimmer do you recomend for a 120 gallon with medium to heavy bioload?

The nac 7 and nac6 use the exact same pump.
The Nac 7 will work great.

Hey Mojo

Thanks again for the 5000xp octopus recommendation for my 300 now I have another request.

I currently have a jbj 28 gallon hqi and it came with a air stone driven skimmer and I would like to get a better skimmer for it. What do you recommend?

Mojo-

Great info. I have a 46 gallon Bowfront with a 20 gallon sump. IN the past I have used H&S skimmers on tank. I am on a budget this go around. I usually stock heavy and house a mixed reef. What would you recomend? SWC 120/160 vs Bubble Magus Nac6/7 vs Vertex in-100? All about in the price range I am looking but I don't want to get too small a skimmer. This will be internal in a 13X9 area. Thanks for your help

Mojo,

From what I've read here, I've decided on the Bubble King brand. Can you suggest the right size for my 350G sps heavy load?

I was thinking either the Deluxe 250 or Supermarin 250 but I'm not sure what the difference is?

Thanks,
Jim

ok, need opinions. Have 400 dollars peferably 500 max Need the best skimmer I can buy with this money for the following system.

155 Gallon Tank
50 Gallon(guestimate, homemade wood) sump, approx 1/2 Full
20 Gallon Fuge
20 Gallon Frag Tank

So a total Gallonage of roughly 200 Gallons and when moving, a 120 Gallon Sump will replace the 50 gallon SO I need something that will easily handle 400-450 Gallons.

would like to try to have it be as efficent as possible with both skimming and power useage.

I know, my budget is low, but if there is something close to the range, please post it, may be worth the wait for the extra dough if its a gotta have set up.

Ok... so now that I've decided to go with the ATB 840 (thanks Mojo!) I have a few questions:

I don't see a gate valve on the skimmer, does it have a wedge pipe? Do you recommend putting a gate valve on?
Also do you recommend upgrading the impellar to the purple? Can the WM Red Demon be used w/ the ATB 840? I like to keep a decent amount of water in my sump and I prefer not to raise the skimmer up on a platform. Does this force me to use the stock impellar? I have a fairly light bio-load (180 display / 280+- total w/ a 8" FoxfaceLo and a 7" red sea Sailfin) but may increase it by a few smaller fish.

Thanks again!
