Skimmer Q&A Thread

Ok... so now that I've decided to go with the ATB 840 (thanks Mojo!) I have a few questions:

I don't see a gate valve on the skimmer, does it have a wedge pipe? Do you recommend putting a gate valve on?
Also do you recommend upgrading the impellar to the purple? Can the WM Red Demon be used w/ the ATB 840? I like to keep a decent amount of water in my sump and I prefer not to raise the skimmer up on a platform. Does this force me to use the stock impellar? I have a fairly light bio-load (180 display / 280+- total w/ a 8" FoxfaceLo and a 7" red sea Sailfin) but may increase it by a few smaller fish.

Thanks again!

Does anyone know if the ATB 840 has or needs a gate valve?
And do you think I need the pinwheel upgrade?

Mojo~. I wish to pick your brain for a moment, sir!

If you had the choice between these two skimmers, which would you go with?

SRO External Cone 2000xp or ATB 840 with the Sicce 2500

For a 120 gallon with an expected added volume of about 80-100 gallons (sump & frag tank)... Bare Bottom

Thanks,
NathanS

THE atb 840 with mini airstar.
would be m choice for many reasons.

the wedge pipe is all you need to adjust it. works great and why would you need a pinwheel upgrade. they work well right out of the box.

Hi Mojo,

I have one of the new Deltec models sc 2060 in a 105 gallon mix tank with low bioload. The thing is that I can only get a dirty neck or if I raise water level a lot I can get a clear liquid with some poo at the bottom of the cup.
The foam head looks always fizzy.
Can this be because it is very over sized for my system?

what sump skimmers would you guys recommend for my 55g tank setup.... the sump is a pro clear wet dry 7.5" wide by 20"long and 16" or so high. I am brand new to the hobby and will probably be asking for a lot more advice on here. Just about to begin my tank cycling once I hook up the sump and get the LR for it along with a skimmer. As a side note, I added in an extra divider just before the the pump so I could do away with the bio-balls and use the LR instead since that seems to be the way to go on here. Anyway, any advice for skimmer selection would be greatly appreciated!! I'm not too concerned on the price range, I just want to know what is good quality for my size sump. Thanks!
Neil

Yea those skimmers are amazing but its too large for your setup. You need something with a neck around 4 inches. 600 to 900 lph of air and you will be better off.

Check out the SWC 120. Small foot print od build and will suite your load well.

i just measured my chamber which the skimmer can go in....it is only 4" long by 7.5" wide...my first measurements was just the total measurement of the sump size, I should have mentioned the size of the chamber the skimmer would go in....so I guess they would have to fit in there or be an external one...any suggestions for these parameters?

Mojo, what's your suggestion for around 600g total volume system in the $700-$1200 range, medium stock with SPS and LPS. I was leaning towards the SWC Askoll Cone since I have a 160 cone and it works like a champ.

Hey Mojo, truely awesome info you have put up on here. And the advice you seem to give is right on so I'd like to ask a bit. You have a great build thread by the way. Look forward to seeing what comes next.

Anyway, back to this thread and my question. I have a 92g corner tank and about 20g sump. I have currently an ATI BM 160 skimmer that's been in use awhile. I cracked the skimmer cup ages ago and just siliconed it back together. Well now the pump has crapped out on me and wondering should I just replace the sicce 2500 or I have permission from the wife to get a new skimmer. Is there something you'd recommend with my ceiling topping out at 300-350$?
I was thinking maybe octopus super reef 2000 or octopus extreme 200? Is there something else that I should look at better within my price range? What do you think? Thanks Mojo, keep up the great advice and build thread.

THe SRO 2000 would be great. The warner marine AS150(on sale) the cs200 and last but not least the SWC 160 cone. All in your price range and great units.
