Skimmer Q&A Thread

I agree. THe BB pumps do work really well but do hum. THe Askol is very quiet. I can not hear my bb pump when I close my doors on the stand though.

Similar performance though.

The NAc 7 would be my choice. Not built as good as the a150 but I believe it is better balanced and will perform well for you. I liked the NAC 7 I had. Build wasnt as heavy as I like but it performed well.

Mojo~

I see, so in other words, it's better than NWB200?

Thanks for the prompt reply bro Mojo :D

What odd on this its the whole skimmer thats more the issue. If I take the pump out of the body it seems pretty quiet. With the pump plugged into the body, the whole thing sort of resonates and hums. They need more isolation between the body and the pump.

I assume you are still going to run a sump? I run skimmer filter sock carbon and gfo.

Ran that way for long time. Just started running biopellets. No fuge for me.

No no sump, tank is not drilled, and don't have the money for drilling it, installing overflows, bulkheads, sumps, pumps, etc. I was looking at Instant Ocean's 100 gallon tank rated skimmer, and using a Marineland Emperor 400 HOB filter with one side of the media cartridge normal carbon cartridge for the Emperor and use the other side of the media container to use media bags filled with phosphate remover. Would this be effective for a light stock only 3-4 fish and say 15% water change every 14-21 days?

I would say your bx 1 and the vertex in 100 are really similar in performance. the sro 1000 and SWC cone would be a small upgrade yes. maybe not in quality but in performance yes

Thanks Mojo, I went with the SWC 160. It's a bt pricy locally at $350 but I got it home the same night and it is humming along.

It has been 10 hours since it started, got about 1 table spoon worth of light tea. A bit less than my BX-1. I wait for a few days and see.

I am current at 6.5" with fully-open air-valve and the foam-top is set at the drain-plug of the collection cup.

Regards.

Skimmer to big

Skimmer to big

Vertex IN-100 on a 29g with 15g 10g sump, I know overkill but would their still be enough organics for the skimmer to work?

Mojo, another quick question.. given a choice between the following on a 45 gallon + 20 sump..

-Vertex IN 100 (thinking of selling)
-Warner Marine S-150 (not the AS) .. new.. .on sale for $240
-Warner Marine AS-150 slightly used for $250
-SWC 120 cone (about $225)

I plan on selling the Vertex for about $160 locally, so I'd only have to come up with the extra cash.. what would you choose?

Thanks

with the size of the tank I would lean towards the swc 120. But the s 150 wm skimmer is a nice unit .simple design but t just works.

thanks Mojo. Do you think the Sedra pump is more reliable than the Atman that comes with the SWC?

Right now I think the Vertex IN-100 is a bit too big for my system. Do you think I'll run into those issues if I picked the WM S-150? (I am planning to add more fish, but slowly).

My nitrates are a bit high at 20ppm right now. Thanks again. I really appreciate your help here.

I am looking at MRC mr-2 skimmer and trying to decide if i will need 2nd injector option ?
this one will be going on a system 280 gal .

I think you can do much better than a MRC-2 Skimmer power hungry skimmer. If you still want to use a MRC-2 with two injector you will need a no less than BlueLine 70 HD External Water Pump 1750gph or more ideal is BlueLine 100 HD External Water Pump 1900gph.I had this skimmer and did not like it. Very hard to keep a tune! Always making adjustments to keep it skimming.
The Blueline 70 uses 290 watts of power to run.
The Blueline 100 uses 390 watts of power to run.
Now think of it this way 24 hrs a day 365 days a year. How do you like your electric bill now.

Yeah ... My MRC4R uses a PanWorld PS200 and is an absolutely awesome skimmer!!!

But you have to feed it (which uses watts) and the PS200 reads 320 watts on the meter!!!!

That's why I follow threads like this! ;)

Hey Mojo,
I'm looking for a skimmer for my 180gal that I will be setting up this summer.
I don't care about size or noise, I just want the thing to work well. I'd like to spend less than $600 on the skimmer. Right now I have a Vertex IN-100 Gen II on a 55gal and I'm pretty happy with it except that it seems to randomly fill with water at times or go out of adjustment after a while. I'd be willing to pay a little more for something a little less finnicky and perhaps with a nicer pump.
I have been looking at the SROs-- is there really a $150 difference between the SRO3000 and the SRO3000XP?
Is there another skimmer near this price range that you would recommend over the Reef Octopus?
Thanks!

Hi Mojo~ i need some advice please, i am in the process of setting up a 125G SPS reef BB ,sump would be about 70G, i will be dosing carbon and want a fish load thats Loaded to the MAx. which would you suggest as the best skimmer for me between these

SRO 2000 INT
SRO 3000 INT
XP 2000 INT - issue here is price but would it be seriously outperforming the
SRO 3000 INT where the extra cash is warranted

I would say the xp 2000 or the int 3000. only if you are having a really really heavy load. otherwise stick with the 2000 series.
