Skimmer Q&A Thread

Just finished reading all this thread, Very informative, Thanks for sharing all the info...

I'm Just starting my tank upgrade from 150G to 340 Display and total system volume of around 500G including two huge fuges sump and frag tank.
I upgraded skimmers to a Hurricone Cat one aroudn 1.5 years ago whent hey were very new.
Can't really asses performance as mine had to sit in my return section with variable water level waiting for the upgrade. but currently it is supporting my tank. (4 tangs, 2 clown, Butterfly, 5-6 wrasses and 3 anthias)
Wondering if it'll be possible to use the same skimmer on the new tank or if an upgrade is obligatory. Seeing that ht enew models use the same pump or equivalent and are very clsoe in dimensions... Would appreicate any suggestions. I'm stuck with Octo Skimmers as they're the only option that I can ship till here with reasonable shipping charges. Would it be best to upgrade to one higher rating skimmer like the SRO 5000 or can I add a smaller 2nd skimmer? looked at the SRO 5000 the internal one is rated for 300 G and the ext one is rated for 400 can I get the ext one and use it internal?

One other question is about a used BM skimmer I bought (NAC6 I believe) but with black parts instead of the red parts that are on the website. I meant to use this skimmer during the move and later on on a small cube I'm setting up. got electorcuted by the pump so need to change it. any other pump you recommend for this skimmer instead of the Atman (I can get Eheim or Ocean Runner, Maybe a tunze too) that could boost it's performance. Don't mind modding it to attach an external pump if needed.

Sorry too many questions but need to decide on how to proceed.
Thanks.

I would go with the SRO 5000. IT would suit your needs wonderfully.

I would just get another atman 2500. I know you had bad luck with the one but that is pretty rare. to get another pump to fit would be hard. maybe a Aquabee 2000 or 2000/1

One last question,
checked the SRO 500 Series and am wondering which one I should go with:
SRO EXT 5000: Rated for 400G (Can i Have it internal)
SRO INT 5000: Rated for 300G

don't mind paying a bit more for the Ext one if I can install it in my sump and if it really is a better skimmer. Would this give me more peace of mind and allow me to stock a bit heavier than the internal one?

And finally the SRO XP 5000 int: Rated for 450 Gallons and being a cone. Priced similar tot he ext 5000 but being a cone...

I know all three would fit my tank but which one would you chose.
Thanks for your help.

Super Reef Octopus external XP-2000 or external XP-3000 skimmer?

I have a 120 reef tank with a heavy fish load. It will be sps. There is a 65 gallon fuge with a 45 gallon Oceanic type 3 sump. I have approx 350 lbs of live rock in the system. I estimate aroud 150 to 160 gallons of water. Which would be a better choice, Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 or XP-3000 skimmer

Thanks

Marty

After doing research. I have come to the conclusion that the external xp-2000 is best. I was leaning toward the xp-3000 but learned bigger isnt always better with this skimmer. Thoughts?

Just need a quick conformation. I am in the market for a new skimmer and have been offered a ASM G2 skimmer with a new impeller and a spare ceramic shaft. Now I was looking at the Coarlife Super Skimmer so this should be a nice step up right? I am going to be putting this on my 90 gallon with a 40 gallon sump I am expecting to have a running total gallons of around 110 so for $125 is this a good skimmer for me?

I am setting up a 90 gallon display with a Aqueon model 3 sump (I'm not sure how many gallons that ends up being). Anyway, I'm interested in the SWC160 but I'm not sure it will be able to handle a heavy fish load with my setup, any thoughts?

I would get the 5000 int. Same pump on them all. Just my two cents.

I think long term the 2000 might be better, but with the really heavy load I think you could get away with the 3000 as well. the 2000 has to be in about 6 inches of water just fyi

mojo can i put a warner marine sedra pump on myasm g3 if so where can i buy one

The only sedra that is different for the WM is the 9000 HO. And you would have to get a hold of Jon direct for one. They are custom Machined. Otherwise the other sedras are the same. different venturi and pinwheel is slightly different.

The swc 160 will handle your load just fine. Doest move a ton of water but you will be fine.

Hi Mojo, need help picking a skimmer for my 75 with a 55g sump and later I will add a 30b tank.

Octopus Extreme 200 - $290

Octopus Needlewheel 200 - $275

Bubble-Magus NAC6 - $200

SWC Xtreme 160 Cone - $275

Gen 3 Vertex 180 - $285

Used Euro reef 135 - $110

Well will work well for you. Look at the skimmers and think about what things you like about them. if you are on a budget the euro reef or NAC 6 would be ok. the vertex 180 might be a little big for your setup. The swc 160 cone is nice. I would not suggest the octos there. THe SRO 1000 or 2000 would be a nice fit as well. So it sounds like you have narrowed it down to what you like. I would suggest these in this order
SRO 1000 or 2000
SWC 160 cone
BM NAc 6/7

I think the vertex 180 long term may be a hair too big, same with the extreme 200.

The Euroreef has a cracked Cup but the cracked was repaired with weld on 16. Is that still a good deal or should I wait.

hey Mojo - Need help selecting skimmer for 90 gal with 20 gal sump. plan on med to high bio load. looking for something that does the job well but don't want to spend extra $$ if I don't have to. What do you recommend?

I would wait and get something else. Selling a broken skimmer is as hard as sellinga car that doesnt run.

ATB 840 would be great.

But the SRO 2000 is a perfect fit. but it requires shallow water. about inches. You can also go with a BM NAC 6 or 7, the swc 160 cone or vertex in 180 gen 3
