Skimmer Q&A Thread

the sicce you had was a psk2500. The new ones are the psk 1000. same design as the tunze pump. Non directional and the pinwheel is molded to the magnet assembly.

So basically the one big pump or wo smaller pumps. I prefer one pump as it is one cord and one thing to deal with. Some like two.

Well I am going to take a couple weeks off from here people. Have a lot to do with the new setup and everything else.

C-ya in a couple weeks.

Hey Mojo,
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your question about my skimmer. I work 40 hour weekends so this is the first chance I've gotten. As for yellow, no the pump isn't yellow, nor the skimmer. Here are pics, maybe these can help, if not I can post some other pics.

Thanks again!

WoWeEe!!! Those pictures came up huge, sorry I don't know what happened. Usually my pictures show up small. If you can see them then awesome, but if you can't see them, then I apologize and will figure out a way to resize them.

Octopus XP 2000 - looking to upgrade to something better

Octopus XP 2000 - looking to upgrade to something better

Hi Mojo and skimmer experts,

I have a 90G mixed SPS/LPS reef with about a 30G sump volume. I've been running the Octopus XP 2000 for about a year, and have had the common problems of unpredictable overflows, having to raise the skimmer up almost out of the water to make it function reliably, lots of splashing from the output etc.

Now it performs decently, but I think it could be better. I guess I am toying around with the upgrade to a premium skimmer if it is worth it. I'd really like a rock-solid reliability, low maintenance, high performance skimmer. Any suggestions?

My skimmer chamber is 12" deep and I have the skimmer platform actually about 2" higher than this pic so the output is out of the water:

It would be nice to not have a skimmer on stilts ;)

the bb 3000 would be too large. the 2000 would be perfect. The 1000 syncra isnt bad the the msx 200 body is better suited with the bb2000 IMO
Mojo~

Thanks for the recommendation.
I did pick up the 2000. And fired it up Monday.
So far its pretty quiet ,and making nice sized bubbles. Gonna give it a couple days to settle in. As im still trying to dial it in.

Does anyone have any tips for good production with an SRO-1000int? I'm setting up a new build with this skimmer. I've read a lot of posts and tips are mixed. Some say put it in 8" of water, others say 5". I think the guys from reef specialty were saying 6". I'm trying to plan my baffle height and I'm worried that if I make my baffles too tall and have to put the skimmer on a stand I could get more pump vibrational noise if it is on a stand. At the same time, taller baffles and putting the skimmer on a stand would provide more water volume in the sump which could be beneficial. As you can tell, I'm a bit torn at the moment.

Anyone have thoughts on water depth and how well this skimmer performs (noise wise) on a skimmer stand? Thanks much.

Can't speak for that specific skimmer - sorry, but I have heard that mouse pads work well for dampening the noise. Then you also get the extra water.

Mojo,

Do you know which one of these is the most silent? And which one would you buy?

It looks to me that you are running the inner water level way to high and what is happening is that when there is an increase in biomass the foam exceeds causing the skimmer to overflow. I recommend lowering the inner water level to 1"-2" under the cup to body connection and allow a day or two for the skimmer to adjust and dial it in slowly from there. It also looks as if you can raise the skimmer up a little more. I have found the optimal running height is right about 6" which should just cover the pump with 1" of water.

Thanks for your response. As I said, this picture was my initial setup and the skimmer has been running about 2" higher for the last 8 months or so. So it is in 6" of water and I also have the water at about 1.5" below the cup level. I think it is running as well as it can, but now I am wondering if there may be a better option.

RO XP 1000sss water depth

RO XP 1000sss water depth

Hi mojo and RC,
I bought today the RO XP 1000sss and want to know wich would be the best water depth for that skimmer... I have it right now in 6 1/4 depth, because I read that suposse to be between 6-8inch, but will like to know by your opinion...
Thanks (again),
Omar

I'm in the process of building up a new tank. Currently I have a Octo 110NW on my 55G Tub with around 15G worth of fuge. I'm really happy with the way it works, but in the build of my new tank, I've decided to essentially build bigger than I need rather than 'kinda what I think I need right now' so everything I've purchased for my new 120G (with around another 70G of fuge / frag tank) has been for a 200+ tank (ex extra bits... so think nearly 300 total system volume), so I'd like to stick to that sort of number for building out my skimmer choice.

SWC seems to be where I'm leaning at the moment, does anyone have any suggestions on a good sizing choice, and maybe some suggestions on a mid rage priced skimmer from their range? If you'd suggest against SWC, then maybe a suggestion of a reasonably priced alternative for the above mentioned today, and future.

TIA

Hey, im on a really tight budget ($200) I dont mid buying used, this is going on a 75 gallon Display and a 30 gallon sump. Ive been looking at the nwb150, if you dont mind shoot me a pm, as im not good with checking threads

Jason-

You should consider subscribing to threads and get an instant email when a new post is added.

If $200 is your budget, a Vertex IN100 (Generation 2) would be a good option. I have seen them on sale on a few popular sites for 20% off from time to time. You should look for free shipping as well...

yea the Gen 3 in 100 in a good choice for 200 bucks it will move more water than the atman 2500 skimmers. but the Nac 6 would not be a bad choice either.

Hey mojo

May be I over looked it. Do you have a skimmer break in guide? I just order my first skimmer swc 150. I dont know how to set it or break it in can you adjust the air going in to it? I know you can adjust the water going out or in the pump but I dont really understand it.

Is there a skimmers for dummies :lol2:
