Skimmer Q&A Thread

if you choke off the air you will suck in more water and you dont want that. did you check to the wheel on the new pump ? is it the same as the old one. open the air back up and you might have to open the pump and compare it to the old.

did that and everything is the same. skimmer is working fine now with the air wide open. strange. i guess the pump just needed to break in. thanks for the help.:fish1:

Sometimes the residue on the skimmer boy can cause it to act funny. And its weird, you would think less air the level would go down. But choking the air allows the pump to pull more water and then causes the extra water flow to push the air bubbles out the skimmer.

Glad to hear all is good now.

Hey.
I'm in the process of setting up a 60 Gallon SW tank.
I'm in need of a HOB Protein Skimmer

I've been reading reviews for a few days now, and I've kind of decided that Reef Octopus is the way to go.
I find nothing but good reviews on most of them, and I've seen some bad reviews on other brands...

Questions:
1. I can't really figure out the difference between the BH-100 and the BH-1000, besides price.
On the site I'm planning to get it from it has the exact same description; being rated for 90 Gallons, same OTP1000 Pump, same dimensions.

2. Is Reef Octopus known for being loud? I mean, I know there's going to be some noise, but in general, is it one of those where you can hear it upstairs with a TV on during the day types?

3. Flooding? Once I read one statement that includes that word, I get paranoid. I've seen like 2-3 posts in all my reviews mentioning that the cup overflowed or something.
Does this happen a lot, should one be concerned about it?
How does it happen? Is it from the air-pump?

The flooding thing has me second guessing this purchase.

Thanks

The bh 1000 and 100 have teh pumps in different places from what I can see. The 1000 and 100 have great reviews. but the 1000 is a bit better. Not that the OCT 1000 is the best pump in the world but its not bad either and its better than the resun king the bh 100 uses.

if you could swing the extra $$ the sro lx1000s would be a great choice.
Otherwise look for a used deltec. They will all work but these are the best for your $$

the sedra is a pretty good pump and its easy replacement. Moves a good amout of water. It balances the skimmer well. If you feel like you need to upgrade the pump the psk 600 and 1000 are both pretty good and the bb 2000 would be too big IMO. I would stick with what works... the sedra.

I would not trust the dimensions on the AS or MRC site. They make no sense, since the footprint is not any wider than the diameter of the cylinder. I asked MRC one time about this, and he posted more accurate specs in the thread, but never updated his product pages. Here are the footprints (includes base and outlet pipe):

OF 100 - 7x7
OF 200 - 9 x 8.25
OF 300 - 12 x 10

That sro lx1000s seems really nice, but it's like $175 more than what I was thinking about.

I just read a review of the BH-100, someone complaining about the Collection Cup size.
And how he has to empty it 2-3 times a day.

These HOB PSs just seem like it'll end in a mess...
Maybe I'll just start with a basic filter and live rock and see if I end up need a P.S
Mess with one then, if I need to.

Does anyone know what pump is on the Eshopps psk75 h I have a gen 1 Ive been told the gen 2 pump is different. I was wondering if I could mod the skimmer for a bb or a sedra or something else?

I want to improve the efficiency of my tunze 9011, are there any tricks to doing this. Could I add and air pump to infuse more air to creat more foam???

Hello all,
Trying to sort out my sump design to hold my Octopus XS-160 and would like to know where to set the baseline water level. My stand is limited so I will have minimal room for adjustment up or down after after it's running so I would like to get close. Also curious if anyone recommends adding anything to the outlet like an open topped elbow with a pipe back down to the sump.

Thanks,

John

There are some good HOB skimmers... take a look at the Warner Marine H2 or the Deltec HOBs.

I'm thinking of a Bubble Magus NAC-7 Cone Protein Skimmer for my setup. 75g display and I think I need to go with a 29g sump. Seems this will fit in the sump and rated appropriately for my tank. FOWLR butterfly and angel with a few other fish.

Currently I have a Reef Octopus dnw 200 but don't know how to run it externally b/c of the big arm on it. How to get that output arm to fit over the edge of my 29g sump wall without the skimmer cup being against the top the top of the stand(since I'll have to lift it up) is what I'm not sure about...blah! Can we cut some plumbing off that arm and re-arrange it w/out messing up the effectiveness?

8 t 9 inches is good. You can go as high as 10 but I would keep it down to about 8 to 8.5

you cannot plumb it up any higher because then the skimmer will overflow.

The nac 7 would be a good fit.
