Skimmer Q&A Thread

How do you think the ATB840 would compare to the SRO 3000? Didn't really know much about the ATB, but I like the 22W pump...I think I really need to stop reading and just pick...every time I look I find something else to consider...

~ Hi mojo, I have a super reef octopus xp 2000,is running at 6''and the gate valve is almost closed so that the bubbles reach the neck, so my question is whether these skimmer is working or if I'm doing something wrong:worried:

I started with roughly 150g of water now I'm pushing 200g with frag tank. I'm running a Vertex 180 and its doing fine but I'm heavily stocked now with both fish and corals and starting to worry a little.

Was looking at the SRO 3000. Would this be a good choice? I have a mixed reef with mostly LPS but just upgraded lighting and will be adding many more SPS over the next year.

Any other good skimmers for roughly 200g, Not looking to break the bank just want another good skimmer choice to look at besides the SRO 3000.

just different apples really. One (the 840) is tried and true where the powercone is new and it has a whole new pump that will have to be tested and build a sense of reliability with customers.

How new is the tank ? try running it at about 6.5 to 7 inches and see how it does.

yea its a good unit and they are really honest about sizing at reef specialty. Great People there and a RC sponsor !

The sro would be a good choice. the vertex in 280 would be good if you like them.

Another option you dont hear much about is the Aquamaxx 250. These are basically Warner MArine skimmers. The WM skimmers were made by JNS in Taiwan. For whatever reason they stopped there partner ship and sell to marine depot under the aquamaxx Name.

The AM 250 is the same as the ol wanrer marine as 200 but with the sedra 9000 HO pump inside the body. So you get huge water turnover and still 1050 lph of air.

I just ordered one myself to play around with to see how I like it and to back up what I am saying about them being like the warner marines. And at 379 they will be a pretty good choice as well if you want a smaller footprint.

I would buy either a BK super Marin 200, A ATB 1050a or a BK mini gen2 200.

All use the same pump. The atb will come with the best customer service around.
 
Mojo...You're awesome!!! Thanks for all the help! I'm going with the ATB 840 for now and later down the road when I upgrade to a bigger tank(210g) I might consider the ATI's once they've been tested out a bit more.

Looking for a skimmer for my new 90G (323l) fluval profile 1200. Now its a nice looking tank and i want to keep it that way, but the cabinet doesn't leave room for a decent sump. Its going to be a LPS dominated reef, maybe a couple of SPS but not at the expense of LPS and anenome. Stocking levels i would consider normal. Was looking for nice skimmer that is compact. I'm from the UK so doont have all the options of you guys but was looking a t a deltec MCE 300 HOB or the MCE600. Another option is the TMC V2 compact 500, cheaper but is it any good? I want to avoid the full size V2600 if possible due to noise and it being a bit of an eyesore. What do you think? Am i on the right lines? I have a small sump tank available to house the skimmer or might just run it off the display.

Thank you for taking the time to put all of this useful knowledge together. After reading this all I was wondering what skimmer you might recommend for me. I have a 56 column tank with 15 gallon sump. There is about 50 gallons of actual water in the tank and I have a bioload of 7 small fish that are feed once a day; Corals feed once per week. Water changes are 15 gallons weekly.

I would go with the mce600 . It will cycle about twice the water of the 300. But just the right amount for the tank you have. keep an eye out you might be able to get one used. They are a nice little quiet skimmer.

the sro 1000 would be a great choice.
 
Thanks, that's the way i was leaning. Am interested in the V2 skim compact thought, not seen any reviews yet. Anyone used one? Personally I will be going for the deltec on this occasion though as recommended.
 
Right now I have a 6-month-old heavily stocked 75 gallon reef tank and I'm running a sealife seastorm 75(older model) skimmer. It produces about 6 oz of dark wet coffee colored skimmate a week. I just ordered a swc 160 cone and I'm wondering if I will notice an increase in skimmate produced with the new skimmer.
